Some Mensa practice tests are free, but a practice result does not qualify you for membership. Start with the exact product name and the country offering it: a free puzzle challenge, a paid practice test and a supervised admission test can all appear in a search for “Mensa IQ test.” They serve different purposes.
For free official practice, use Mensa International's IQ Challenge or follow the online-test link on Mensa Norway's own website. For membership, use the admission route specified by your national Mensa organisation. FermatMind is an independent site, not a Mensa test provider.
Mensa Norway labels its online test as free and informal. Its English instructions describe 35 visual-pattern questions with a 25-minute limit, and explain that the result does not replace professional or supervised testing. Follow the age choices and instructions on that particular test rather than assuming they apply to another provider's form.
The International Challenge also provides a direct practice route. Choose it to try the puzzles, rather than to obtain an admission certificate. If you want a shorter official activity, British Mensa's free workout is another option, but its page explicitly says it does not give an IQ score. A free activity and a free numeric result are different offers.
Before starting any other site's “Mensa-style” test, identify who publishes it. A familiar name or similar-looking shapes do not establish Mensa ownership or acceptance. Follow a link from the relevant organisation's own website, and check what the result page promises before spending time on the questions.
Can an online Mensa test count for admission?
An unsupervised practice challenge cannot. However, the blanket statement “no online test can ever count” misses an important distinction: British Mensa currently offers an approved online supervised assessment. Its page describes remote proctoring and eligibility for membership at the stated threshold. It also requires residence in the UK or Ireland and specifies identity, equipment and room requirements. This is a particular national service, not permission to use any online score anywhere.
For example, a UK reader who completes the International Challenge and sees a high score still needs an approved admission route. The fact that both activities run in a browser does not make their results interchangeable. The booking page should identify supervision, candidate eligibility and acceptance for membership explicitly.
Use the Mensa International national-office directory to locate the relevant organisation. Ask it which test or prior evidence it accepts, and what age, residence and administration conditions apply. The international membership FAQ describes the approved-test requirement; the current national service supplies the practical conditions.
What result or report will you actually receive?
Admission eligibility and a detailed cognitive report are separate outputs. American Mensa's admission page says its test is for admission and that it does not provide an IQ score, percentile ranks or a detailed score report. Do not assume that paying for an admission session buys the kind of report a psychologist might prepare for a different assessment purpose.
If your goal is membership, check whether the result is accepted. If your goal is an explanation of learning difficulties or a formal assessment requested by a school or clinician, establish what assessment and report that recipient needs before choosing a test. A practice score cannot settle that decision.
Before booking, write down three answers from the provider's page:
Purpose: practice, admission eligibility or another assessment purpose?
Output: a practice number, a qualification decision, a score report or feedback?
Conditions: who can take it, what supervision is required, and what you must prepare?
If a page only promises a “certificate,” ask who accepts it and for what purpose. A downloadable document alone does not establish Mensa eligibility.
How to practise without confusing practice with qualification
For visual puzzles, practise explaining a rule and checking it against the given cells. Our three original matrix-reasoning examples show that process without disclosing a provider's test-bank answers. Reading a solution and remembering it is a different task from solving a new problem unaided.
For independent practice, the FermatMind IQ test contains 30 original visual-reasoning questions, with an estimated duration of about 20 minutes. Its test and results are currently free. That estimated duration is not a 25-minute Mensa deadline, and the result is not a Mensa qualification or an interchangeable score from a different instrument. See our guide to IQ scores, answer accuracy and score limits before comparing numbers from different sites.
Choose official Mensa practice if you want that provider's activity; choose your national organisation's approved route if you want membership. Use other reasoning exercises for their stated practice purpose.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Mensa IQ test free?
Some official practice activities are free, including the International IQ Challenge and Mensa Norway's informal online test. Practice, home tests and admission services are different products, so check the exact offer rather than assuming every Mensa test is free.
Can a high Mensa practice score qualify me for membership?
No. The International Challenge is practice and does not qualify you. Your national Mensa organisation decides which properly administered tests and prior evidence it accepts.
Does “online” always mean it is only practice?
No. British Mensa currently offers a supervised online admission service with specific eligibility and proctoring requirements. That service is distinct from an unsupervised browser challenge.
Will a Mensa admission test give me a detailed IQ report?
Check the national service's promised output. American Mensa explicitly says its admission test does not provide an IQ score, percentile ranks or a detailed score report; other services must be checked separately.
Is FermatMind an official Mensa test?
No. FermatMind's original 30-question form is independent reasoning practice. Its result is not evidence of Mensa membership eligibility.
