Keep the reason for a pause and the pending issue separate
Four original self-reports cover ending, not raising, redirecting and postponing a disagreement. Read the arithmetic and concrete examples without inferring a personality disorder, childhood cause or obligation to confront an unsafe person.
Four numeric ratings produce a forward-scored sum of 4–20 and mean of 1–5. A skip withholds this group, while every guide stays available.
What leaving an issue for now describes
- The four items ask about ending an unresolved discussion, leaving a possible disagreement unmentioned, changing the subject when a disputed arrangement returns, and postponing a response without pursuing either option. These actions can occur for different reasons. The group records how often you recall them in the selected setting; it cannot distinguish a deliberate pause from an unwanted delay simply by averaging the answers.
- In five-mode discussions this is broadly associated with avoiding. That word does not diagnose an avoidant personality or explain someone’s childhood, anxiety or motives. A person may step back from one issue while being direct about another. The fact that a conversation stopped tells you less than knowing what remained unresolved, whether there was a safe option to continue, and what happened afterwards.
Read more or less frequent, without a health label
- A larger mean indicates more frequent reports of these four actions; a smaller mean indicates fewer. Neither shows whether you care about the other person or whether the pause helped. A setting with repeated interruptions can produce different answers from one with protected discussion time. A lower value could also coexist with insisting on your own plan. The mean does not identify which alternative you used.
- Look for differences among the items. You might stop an unproductive conversation but return at an agreed time, or leave a recurring topic unmentioned because there is no useful route for discussing it. The questions do not record that full history. If a situation did not occur, use the unscored option rather than imagining what you would probably do. A missing mean leaves the general guide available.
A mean of 1.8 is not a probability
- Take the example order of ending a discussion, not raising a topic, changing the subject, and postponing a response. Ratings of 1, 2, 3 and 1 sum to 7. All four are forward-scored, so 7/4=1.75, displayed as 1.8 out of 5. The report retains the sum of 7 and four valid ratings. It does not estimate an 18 percent chance of avoiding the next disagreement.
- Ratings of 2, 1, 1 and 3 also sum to 7 but emphasize different actions. If one item is unscored, this group shows insufficient information instead of a personal sum or mean. The other complete groups keep their results. Requiring all four numeric ratings is an editorial completeness rule, not a validated missing-data threshold. You can finish all twenty selections with unscored answers and still read every full guide.
Pausing a discussion and losing the issue are different
- Imagine a shared project discussion has become repetitive and a needed document is missing. Ending the meeting until the document is available may create room for a better-informed decision. It may also leave the issue neglected if nobody knows who will obtain the document or when a decision is needed. The questionnaire records a reported action, not whether the pause was well planned or successful.
- If a return is useful and safe, naming the pending question, the responsible person and the next review point can reduce ambiguity. If the task is no longer needed, that can be stated too. “We are not deciding this today” is different from pretending it has been resolved. There is no requirement to hold a new meeting when the issue is minor, already settled elsewhere or inappropriate for joint discussion.
Leaving an unsafe exchange is not a defect to correct
- Someone may leave, decline to answer or avoid raising a topic because continuing would expose them to threats, humiliation or unwanted disclosure. This mean cannot establish whether such conditions exist. It must not be used to demand that a person stay in a dangerous interaction or prove willingness to cooperate. Appropriate support, protection and responsible channels may take priority over direct discussion with the person involved.
- Another counterexample is calling repeated silence a strategic pause when a manageable shared responsibility remains unclear and safe ways to address it are available. You can acknowledge that an issue has been left pending without calling yourself uncaring. Distinguishing practical constraints, chosen boundaries and a task that needs attention gives more useful information than attaching a healthy or unhealthy label to every instance of stepping back.
Postponing is different from conceding
- Yielding follows the other person’s preference; stepping back can leave both preferences unpursued for the time being. Trading concessions still seeks an agreement involving changes on both sides. Joint problem-solving develops options together, while pressing your own plan continues to pursue your proposal. A person can use these at different moments in the same event. The test does not reconstruct that sequence or prescribe a universal order.
- All five means are shown separately and every full reading remains accessible. No total, winning style, assertiveness coordinate or career suitability is calculated. Similar values do not prove that the actions served the same purpose, and a slightly larger mean does not establish a dominant personality. Read the behaviors and their context before making a decision about what, if anything, you want to change.
One optional note about what remains pending
- For one manageable situation, privately note the unresolved issue, the information or condition needed to address it, and a safe next route if one is available. That route might be a short clarification, a request to the responsible person or a decision that the issue no longer needs attention. You do not have to share the note or contact someone directly. The website asks for no names or event details.
- A counterexample is setting a return time that nobody can keep, or promising to reopen a discussion solely to make a score look better. Choose a step that fits the actual circumstances and stop if it would create risk or unnecessary pressure. No retest is required, and the aim is not to eliminate every pause. A temporary boundary can remain a deliberate, reasonable choice.
Original reflection, with a separate source framework
- FermatMind wrote these 20 frequency statements and the five complete guides. The broad five-mode idea is discussed in Thomas and Kilmann’s work and in the Kilmann Diagnostics overview linked from the test’s entry page. This edition does not reproduce the TKI’s thirty paired choices, scoring key, report or comparison norms. It is not the TKI, a validated short form, or an instrument endorsed by its authors. The five editorial groups are descriptive self-reports.
- Reliability, meaningful-change thresholds and equivalence between the two language versions have not been established for these original items. Memory, social desirability and which opportunities occurred can affect responses. The complete public guides are available before answering and when a group has insufficient information. Sharing copies only a public title and link, not personal answers or means. You may read another guide, return to all tests or finish here.
