Take the free 20-item IPIP locus of control test. Read raw scores, ten reversals, missing information and a full guide to control beliefs and limits.
20 questions · about 5 minutes · no signup
Rate how accurately each statement describes you as you generally are now, from 1 Very inaccurate to 5 Very accurate, rather than your preferred image. English items come from public-domain IPIP; Chinese is our trial translation. Success, ability and comfort statements ask for self-description, not a website assertion that these are objectively true. Use the separate option when inapplicable, insufficiently informed or preferring not to answer; it is neither neutral nor zero. Complete twenty selections for the full reading; a raw total requires all twenty ratings. No personal story is entered.

How do you describe initiative, decisions, luck and handling difficulties? This edition uses the public-domain IPIP Locus of Control: Total twenty-item English bank, its ten positive and ten negative keys, and our Chinese trial translation. Rate accuracy as a description of how you generally are now. All twenty ratings are needed for a raw total from 20–100 and a descriptive mean; any unscored response leaves the personal result unavailable while the full nine-section guide remains readable. It covers higher, lower, middle and mixed responses, examples, counterexamples, evidence and privacy without four cutoff-based types. It judges neither actual control, responsibility nor ability and does not separately measure the three IPC subscales. Item overlap with other IPIP scales does not convert totals into optimism or growth beliefs. Everything is free without another assessment.
Use 1 Very inaccurate through 5 Very accurate. The ten odd-numbered items are direct; even items LOC_02, 04, 06, 08, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18 and 20 use six minus the rating. With all twenty ratings, add the keyed values for a raw total from 20 to 100. An optional two-decimal mean divides that unrounded total by twenty; it is never reconstructed from a rounded one-decimal value. Higher totals lean toward internal-control-related self-description in this key, lower toward external-control-related description. There is no percentile, pass mark or four-band assignment, and one point establishes no meaningful change.
There is no highest-score type, four-band split, pass mark or norm percentile. Higher and lower describe this key direction only. Sixty can arise from neutral or uniformly accurate or inaccurate responses, without an ideal balance or population average. Any NA prevents a personal total, while the full guide and examples remain.
Optimism concerns expected outcomes, growth beliefs concern whether skills can change, and control beliefs concern agency-related and external-factor descriptions. Overlapping items do not make the products interchangeable. Five public-domain English items also appear in our optimism bank; each retains its own published key direction, without converting one score into the other. IPIP separately lists ten-item Internality, Powerful Others and Chance keys, plus a five-item Rational Scale. This attempt does not independently administer those banks. Do not infer their facet scores or a winning type from this total, or subtract imagined subscales to reconstruct the published twenty-item key.
One full guide covers higher, lower, middle or mixed IPIP totals and insufficient information, with examples, counterexamples and edition limits. It assigns no four-band type. Public pages contain no personal answers or scores; read before deciding whether to answer.
A full guide to the twenty-item IPIP total key, higher and lower totals, mixed or missing responses, examples and counterexamples, without four types or assigning real control or blame.
This reading comes from the twenty-item Locus of Control: Total key published by IPIP, not Rotter’s twenty-nine-item forced-choice I-E, the original twenty-four-item Levenson IPC, or another name for our optimism test. English wording is retained, Chinese is our trial translation, and positive and negative items alternate. The key includes self-descriptions about success, decisions, comfort and difficulty, so not every sentence is a narrow causal-attribution question. Read a self-reported total for this particular bank rather than an audit of power, resources or choices available in your circumstances. The edition matters when comparing results.
The ten even-numbered keys use six minus a valid rating and odd keys are direct. All twenty ratings are needed for a raw total of 20–100. Any NA is never replaced with zero, neutral or an estimate from nineteen items. A mean uses the unrounded sum divided by twenty. Adding ordered categories is a convention, and decimals imply no precision.
This edition assigns no good/bad verdict or validated ideal or healthy interval. Its raw total describes answers to this bank, establishing neither actual control, ability nor responsibility. A midpoint certifies no balance. Examine possible actions and constraints in the actual situation without using a score to demand more responsibility from yourself.

IPIP explicitly permits commercial and non-commercial use, translation and editing; the twenty English items and key directions can be checked publicly. Reliability and correlations in its table concern the original Eugene-Springfield Community Sample work, not a guarantee about this Chinese trial, web format, NA option or individual result. Local norms and established language equivalence are absent. Ability, comfort and self-evaluation language should not be silently rewritten while claiming the same research bank, but those self-descriptions are not objective ability or clinical status. Reproducible arithmetic supplies neither a diagnosis, a hiring decision nor a health assessment.
If useful, choose an ordinary situation and separately note an action you could try, information you might ask for and conditions you cannot presently decide. No private story is needed, and the exercise promises neither a higher score nor a changed life. All twenty items and this full text are free without registration, email or another assessment. Answers are scored in the browser without uploading or entering links or analytics. Opted-in drafts last twenty-four hours in this tab and clear on completion, retake or exit-and-clear. Sharing contains only the test name and public entry, without answers, totals or internal/external labels. You can finish here.
This edition uses the twenty English items and key directions in the public-domain IPIP Locus of Control: Total representation, not Rotter’s 29-item forced-choice I-E, the original 24-item Levenson IPC or JobCannon’s twelve original items. It does not administer the separate Internality, Powerful Others and Chance subscales or infer this total from their names. Scores establish neither actual control, responsibility, ability, self-esteem, optimism, health, motivation nor job performance. ESCS reliability and correlations concern the original sample and administration, not validation of this Chinese trial, NA convention or an individual result. There are no local norms, percentiles, good/bad ratings or type cutoffs.
