Ask what the thinking gave you, without grading productivity
Three items concern perceived lack of resolution or help from repeated thinking. The sum is about your reported experience, not a measure of work output or problem-solving ability.
Add the selected 0–4 values for items 4, 9 and 14 without reversal. The sum ranges from 0 to 12 and requires all three numeric answers; one unscored response withholds it.
Unproductive here concerns the experienced thinking process
The subscale asks whether thinking about problems seems to resolve little, leaves questions unanswered or provides little help. It does not measure employment productivity, motivation, creativity or objective problem difficulty. Some problems cannot be solved through thought alone because information, resources or another person’s decision are missing. The scale cannot determine which barrier applies to you.
Three original items give one raw sum
The fictional example selects 2, 2 and 2 for items 4, 9 and 14, giving 6 out of the possible 12. There is no conversion to percent unproductive and no clinical category at six. Do not compare the raw sum directly with the nine-item core sum: the different numbers of questions produce different possible ranges.
An unanswered question may need information, not more replay
Imagine wondering repeatedly why a delayed application has no reply. Replaying the same possibilities may not reveal the actual status; a permitted status check might supply different information. This fictional example does not say that every delay can be resolved by contacting someone or that uncertainty is your fault. The questionnaire cannot know whether further action is possible or appropriate.
A small sum is not proof that every thought is useful
People can interpret usefulness differently, and the form does not inspect the outcomes of their thoughts. A larger sum cannot establish laziness, poor intelligence or a failure to try. If you cannot judge an item, the added unscored option leaves it missing rather than low. This withholds this part and the total while preserving any other complete subscale.
Separate a question you can check from one still open
If useful, write a short question and note whether there is new information you can safely obtain. It is also acceptable to leave a question unresolved rather than keep producing explanations. You need not submit the question here. If repeated thinking is causing distress or disrupting life, consider qualified support; a specific numerical threshold is not required before asking for help.
Read the three-item evidence with its limits
The original authors identified this as a three-item subscale and discussed the limits of brief subscales. Their findings are not a personal improvement target or a validated minimum change for this website. English wording is retained with the original article’s CC BY 3.0 attribution; the new Chinese translation and unscored handling are marked adaptations.
