Use the raw number alongside your circumstances
Read the arithmetic, response patterns, limitations and optional next steps without diagnostic cutoffs.
Your total ranges from 0 to 16. Higher totals reflect more perceived stress in these answers; no universal severity band, diagnosis or population rank is assigned.
What this total describes
- PSS-4 asks about perceived control, confidence and accumulating difficulty during the past month. Your total summarizes these four answers; it does not count every stressor or establish a health condition.
- This website explanation is editorial material. Published studies concern particular versions, languages and samples; they do not validate this website presentation or establish that every language edition works identically.
How the total is calculated
- Each answer is valued from 0 to 4. Keep the values for questions 1 and 4; for questions 2 and 3, use 4 minus the selected value. Add the four contributions for a total from 0 to 16.
- For example, 3, 1, 2 and 3 contribute 3, 3, 2 and 3, totaling 11. This arithmetic example is not a high-stress classification. The website displays a total only when all four answers are valid; that complete-response rule is a website policy, not a missing-data rule confirmed from the author.
Read the number without a label
- Within this form, a larger total reflects more perceived stress in the answers. There are no universal low, medium or high cutoffs established by the author. The total is not a diagnosis, probability, population percentile or hiring recommendation.
- Different answer patterns can produce the same sum. Look at a particular answer alongside an ordinary situation if that feels useful. The positive items are reversed for calculation; they do not create a separate validated coping-capacity score here.
Put the answers in context
- Workload, caregiving, illness, money and available support can shape what is possible. A questionnaire cannot resolve those conditions. You may simply notice one demand or one source of support without setting a target score.
- If difficulties persist or affect daily functioning, you can discuss the situation with a trusted health professional regardless of this total. No score here determines whether you deserve or need support.
Use repeated check-ins carefully
- Keep the past-month recall period if you choose to use the form again. Weekly completion still refers to overlapping months; it does not turn PSS-4 into a validated seven-day scale.
- A small change can reflect recollection and circumstances. This website supplies no reliable-change threshold or personal trend diagnosis. You may note context privately, or stop after reading this guide.
Privacy, language and limits
- Your answers and total stay in current-page memory and are cleared on reload, language change or exit. Copying shares only this fixed public guide, without answers or a score.
- The English questions come from the author’s laboratory. Chinese prompts and answer labels are FermatMind’s independent translation, not the listed official China version. Validated Chinese equivalence and population norms are not claimed.
