Separate social-understanding self-descriptions from what can be checked.
Read four IPIP-VIA-R self-reports through raw sums, reverse keys, higher or lower readings, missing information and checking an inference.
Choose accuracy from 1 to 5. The two positive items keep their rating; the two negative items about a new social situation and guessing reactions use six minus the response. Only four valid ratings produce a raw total, ranging from 4 to 20. A descriptive mean divides the unrounded sum by four and shows two decimals; it never reconstructs the total from the engine’s one-decimal mean. For example, responses 4, 2, 3, 1 in presentation order become 4 + 4 + 3 + 5 = 16, with a mean of 4.00. Any NA prevents a personal total. Category sums are a scoring convention, not measurement precision.
What four self-descriptions can tell you
This guide reads how accurately you describe yourself in four statements: sensing others’ feelings, handling yourself in a new social setting, knowing what to say to make people feel good, and guessing their reactions. English retains the four SOC/SIQ items in IPIP-VIA-R; Chinese uses our existing trial translation. Words such as good and know remain your self-description, not our verdict on ability. The four statements contribute to one continuous score rather than four kinds of person, and this edition has no five social roles. You may read everything before answering or finish here without supplying a real conversation.
How to reproduce the raw total
Higher totals: checking the basis of confidence
A higher total means greater endorsement in this key direction. You may feel that you know how to respond in familiar settings or feel confident interpreting reactions. It does not establish that a guess was correct, that people like you, that you actually made someone feel good or that you have high EQ. A confident inference can still miss language habits, personal expression or practical circumstances. For an ordinary, non-sensitive event, privately distinguish what you observed, what you inferred and what the person explicitly said. Without that last information, leave an inference possible rather than using this score to supply the missing evidence. No private explanation is owed.
Lower totals: keeping uncertainty in context
A lower total means less endorsement of the positive descriptions or more endorsement of the negative ones. An unfamiliar group, effortful communication across languages, limited feedback or reluctance to claim knowledge of other minds may all matter; four answers cannot distinguish those explanations. Asking directly, preferring written communication or observing first is not automatically worse than responding spontaneously. This total warrants no label of low intelligence, failed empathy, social failure or a health condition. If useful, choose a concrete matter that actually needs coordination and clarify timing, a task or a preference. Act on the answer without first requiring a higher self-rating or more friends.
Middle, mixed and insufficient information
Twelve can result from choosing three for every item, or one or five for every item, because two items reverse. Those patterns differ; twelve is no population average, optimal balance or ordinary social intelligence. Different item patterns can also share another total, so a total cannot identify a specific difficult situation. If one answer is unscored because you cannot judge, lack information or prefer not to answer, the attempt can still finish with the whole guide available. Its personal total and mean remain unavailable without estimating from three ratings. An unselected response is unfinished. You may remain unscored, clear progress or retake without disclosing anything private.
Turning an inference into a checkable question
Suppose you send instructions for a shared task and receive only “Received.” The observable fact is a short reply, not coldness, agreement or complete understanding. If coordination genuinely needs confirmation, you could ask whether the deadline works or whether a written checklist would help. Allow an inconvenient answer or another proposal without asking whether the person secretly dislikes you. A counterexample matters: a longer reply to the same wording proves no improvement in social ability; the person may simply have more time. An optional experiment is to make one necessary coordination question concrete. Do not manufacture conversations, record private messages or expect guaranteed improvement in relationships or performance.
Comparing character strengths, EQ and other editions
The social-intelligence facet in our 96-item character-strengths form contains these same four items, bilingual wording, keys and raw arithmetic. This focused entry makes them easier to access; it introduces no different psychological construct. Surrounding questions and the context of separate administration may affect responses, so matching arithmetic does not establish equivalence between administrations. Nor can the longer form’s one-decimal display substitute for this raw total. These self-descriptions are not extraversion, kindness, intimate care or emotional ability and cannot convert into IQ or EQ. The 21-item TSIS, VIA Institute survey and JobCannon’s five profiles use other material and methods. Numbers from those editions are not interchangeable or a hiring ranking.
Item evidence and interpretation limits
English wording and positive or negative keys come from the four SOC, now SIQ, items in the official IPIP-VIA-R table. IPIP places its items, scales and inventories in the public domain for commercial and non-commercial use without contacting the author. That applies to IPIP material, not other social-intelligence instruments, brands or competitor content. German and UK statistics in the key table concern the original research conditions, not this Chinese trial translation, separate four-item presentation, NA rule or you individually. We have no representative local norms, individual accuracy estimate, optimal interval or meaningful-change threshold for this edition. Broad item wording resolves neither the construct debate nor questions about health, neurodivergence or observed ability.
Reviewing and sharing this result
All nine sections, the public guide, retakes and sharing are free without another assessment. On review, consider whether you pictured familiar companions, a new group or cross-language settings. Changing context can change answers; a single difference demonstrates neither improvement nor decline in ability. The page collects no conversation or third-party details and processes answers on this device. An explicitly enabled tab draft lasts at most twenty-four hours and clears on completion, exit-and-clear or retake; answering requires no saved draft. Sharing contains only the test name, public guide name and link, without answers, totals, means or rating counts. A later assessment is an optional different framework, not validation or completion of this score.
