Deduction: Necessary Conclusions and Counterexamples
Follow explicit premises, preserve existence and implication direction, and use small countermodels to check whether a conclusion is necessary.
This complete public guide is identical for everyone and available before answering. Your separate private page record shows correct, wrong and unanswered out of six. No percentile, pass band or weakest ability is inferred from these unequated parts.
Ask what must follow
- Deduction asks whether a conclusion holds in every situation that satisfies the supplied premises. Treat those premises as true for this fictional task, even if their labels do not describe ordinary objects. A conclusion that sounds plausible, usually happens or matches your experience need not be necessary. Start by restating the premises as short relationships, then check whether the proposed conclusion has stronger scope than those relationships support.
- This original six-item part uses Follows necessarily and Does not follow necessarily. It is one component of a fixed learning bank, not a calibrated deductive ability scale or an official Watson–Glaser form. The distinction is about what follows from stated premises, not a judgement that a person who misses an item is illogical in general. Keep the response rule separate from the interpretation of a private raw practice count.
Track inclusion without reversing it
- If every copper marker is numbered, the copper group sits within the numbered group. That does not place every numbered marker inside the copper group. A numbered paper marker is a simple counterexample to the reversed claim. Sketching two nested circles or writing copper implies numbered can make the one-way relationship visible before the answer options encourage a reversal that sounds superficially similar to the premise.
- A stronger conclusion needs a stronger premise, such as an explicit statement that every numbered marker is also copper. Without that second direction, do not silently add it. This habit extends to eligibility rules, category descriptions and access conditions, but this exercise does not decide any real entitlement or permission. Its fictional labels keep attention on the logical relationship rather than on whether you like or recognise a real-world category.
Keep existence visible
- Some means at least one in this edition. If some hexagonal tiles exist and every hexagonal tile is stamped, at least one stamped tile is hexagonal. Take the existing tile and follow the rule. In contrast, “every hexagonal tile is stamped” alone can hold when no hexagonal tile exists. A universal condition describes the instances if there are any; it does not always supply an instance by itself.
- A useful working mark is a small dot for an explicitly existing object and an arrow for each rule it satisfies. Do not manufacture dots merely because a category name appears in a sentence. When reviewing an error, ask whether you reversed a group relation or assumed an object existed without evidence. Those are different mistakes and call for different fresh examples, even when both lead to the same wrong answer letter.
Respect conditional direction
- For a rule “if P then Q”, supplying P allows Q. Supplying Q does not by itself allow P, because Q may occur through another route. A fresh example is: if a switch is raised, a display glows. Seeing a glowing display does not prove that switch is raised unless the prompt also excludes other causes or supplies the reverse condition. Write the direction instead of treating two mentioned events as equivalent.
- A denial can also be decisive: with P implies Q and not Q, P cannot hold under those premises. Do not confuse that valid move with inferring not Q from not P. Build a small truth table if the wording becomes tangled. The aim is not to memorise a slogan, but to check which assignments to the two propositions remain possible after every stated premise is applied.
Use a genuine counterexample
- To show that a conclusion is not necessary, construct one situation where all premises hold and the conclusion fails. It is not enough to describe a situation that also violates the premises. For a complete ordering chain, use each named object once and respect every arrow; an invented extra card does not refute an order defined for exactly three cards. A counterexample must obey the same boundaries as the original task.
- A proposed conclusion may be definitely false under the premises or merely unresolved by them. Both belong to Does not follow necessarily in this binary part. Do not import the five inference labels here just because you used them earlier. This is why each question repeats its rule: the same informal phrase can demand a different response action in another part, and changing the rule mid-item changes the exercise rather than solving it.
Plan within the whole-test clock
- All five parts share the site-selected thirty-minute clock in timed mode. There is no reset when you enter deduction or return to a previous item. A compact diagram can reduce the memory burden, but these questions are not a speed norm and their difficulty has not been equated with the other parts. Decide on a simple working method before accelerating; hurriedly reversing a rule is not evidence that the rule itself is difficult.
- You can mark an item unanswered and revisit it before the whole attempt closes. After expiry or early finish, the record distinguishes blanks from selected wrong answers. Untimed study allows the same premise checks without a deadline. Use actual provider instructions for a real assessment’s navigation, permitted notes and assistance. Neither the local timer nor a completed raw count certifies that you worked under an employer’s examination conditions.
Review the logical witness
- For each correct conclusion, write the shortest chain that makes it unavoidable. For each non-necessary conclusion, write an admissible countermodel or identify its explicit contradiction. Then change one premise in a fresh task and see whether your answer changes. This tests whether you understood the dependency, rather than recognised a repeated sentence. It also makes an explanation more useful than simply circling the correct binary option after submission.
- The six-item result is raw information on this fixed bank, not an IQ, population percentile or stable deductive level. Binary items can be guessed correctly, and a count alone cannot distinguish that from reasoning. Do not diagnose a weakest ability by comparing unequated part counts.
