In the United States crushing, grinding, and polishing machine setters, operators, and tenders correspond to O*NET-SOC 51-9021.00 (Crushing, Grinding, and Polishing Machine Setters, Operators, and Tenders), who set up, operate, or tend machines used for crushing, grinding, or polishing materials, handling materials such as coal, glass, grain, stone, food, or rubber: setting the mill and grinding fineness per work orders and specifications, starting and adjusting machine controls, watching auxiliary equipment such as pumps and conveyors to keep material flowing, weighing or measuring materials and products at intervals and sampling for laboratory testing, observing equipment operation to find anomalies in time and clear blockages, cleaning, adjusting, and maintaining equipment and reporting needed repairs, judging and removing nonconforming product per specifications, and recording operation, test, and production data on the designated forms. The preparation level for this occupation is Job Zone 1-2 (usually requiring a high school diploma or equivalent and providing from a few days to one year of on-the-job training); the comparable positions on the Chinese side are crushing, grinding, and polishing equipment operation and watching positions in industries such as mineral processing, building materials, and food processing, whose duty and authorization bases do not correspond one-to-one with this US occupation segment and cannot be interchanged.
Suitable to try first: being able to keep watching equipment continuously in a workshop with dust, noise, and vibration, set and adjust machines per work orders and specifications, weigh and measure at intervals and record truthfully, and being willing to stop the machine and report on anomalies instead of taking risks and making do.
Choose with caution: if you cannot stand for long periods in a noisy and dusty environment and wear protective equipment, avoid repetitive watching and measuring, or cannot accept shift work and overtime, the actual work will not match expectations.
The work object of crushing, grinding, and polishing machine setters, operators, and tenders is crushing, grinding, and polishing equipment, materials and ingredients, and products, as well as operation and quality records; the output is verifiable setup and operation records, weighing and measurement data, sampling and laboratory submission records, anomaly and repair report records, and product judgment records; the basis for handling is work orders and production specifications, equipment operating and safety procedures, and machine guarding and lockout/tagout requirements, not the job title.
Judgment two: is the equipment operating status watched continuously?
Judgment one: do the setup and parameters match the work order specifications?
Set up and operate rolling mills to roll metal or plastic stock into shape.
Set up and operate punching and shearing equipment to punch and shear metal or plastic sheet into shape.
Set up and operate machine tools to grind, lap, polish, and buff metal or plastic workpieces.

Below, tasks are divided into three categories: the parts more easily changed by tools, the parts where people still carry the judgment and responsibility, and the parts where both sides need to be verified at the same time.
Insufficient evidence: no Mainland China occupation-level wage distribution corresponding to crushing, grinding, and polishing machine setters, operators, and tenders (O*NET-SOC 51-9021.00) was obtained
Main employment settings: crushing, grinding, and polishing equipment operation and watching positions in industries such as mineral processing and washing, building materials and cement, chemicals and rubber, food processing, and recycled materials and solid waste treatment.
Examine direct employment, dispatch, shift performance, and overtime pay in recruitment contracts; this round obtained no national employment forms or pay ratios, and employment outside the authorized staffing establishment or dispatched work is not treated as the national norm.
The 2025 wage is the 51-9021.00 single-occupation paid full-time and part-time regular pre-tax wage. US 51-9021.00 single-occupation BLS2025—2035 projection: 26,600 employed in 2025 and a 2035 projection of 26,100, a decline of 2% (Decline label -1% or lower), with 2,300 average annual openings including growth and replacement. Openings are not a ten-year total, annual net additions, or an individual hiring probability, and they do not prove AI causality.
Wage percentiles are distribution positions, and the source does not prove wage causation by industry, shift, region, or equipment type, so a high percentile is not treated as a skill or experience wage.
Observing equipment per work orders, measuring, and recording can serve as editorial fit clues; specific fit must be verified against the real position environment and training, and it is not asserted from personality that one will usually adapt more easily.
You can observe whether you can repeatedly verify the setup, equipment status, measurements, and safety conditions; willingness to repeat does not guarantee continued correctness or safety.
Editorial self-question: can you accept review and communicate adjustments? No causality for review attitudes and continuous improvement or fit validity evidence for this position was obtained, so this is not made a necessary condition.
US OSHA1910.147 distinguishes authorized from affected persons in the hazardous energy servicing and maintenance it applies to (including clearing blockages where unexpected startup or energy release may occur); a stop button is not an energy isolation device. The relevant energy sources must be isolated per the equipment procedure, hazardous stored energy controlled, and isolation verified, and restart must follow the equipment and personnel safety, notification, and lock and tag removal procedures. The applicable conditions and exceptions for normal production and for certain small servicing with effective alternative measures must be verified separately, and it cannot be said that all operations must be locked out or that a button press alone allows clearing a blockage; this is not applied directly to China or to all mining positions. US OSHA1910.212 requires guarding of applicable machine hazard points, in-running nip points, rotating parts, and flying chips and sparks; special hand tools for placing and removing material cannot replace necessary guarding. This is the applicable US machinery rule and is not directly a Chinese law or this position's accident rate.
This page does not cite specific open announcements or count historical recruitment cases as open positions; recruitment and appointment conditions must be verified against the target unit's public information for the current year.
On-site observation is an editorial verification example and does not represent common employer verification methods or a uniform process.

The official projection describes the overall change; downstream demand, investment, and specific recruitment can serve as editorial verification angles, and this round obtained no causal estimate that they have already determined this position's distribution.
US 51-9021.00 single-occupation BLS2025—2035 projection: 26,600 employed in 2025 and a 2035 projection of 26,100, a decline of 2% (Decline label -1% or lower), with 2,300 average annual openings including growth and replacement. Read the work order to determine production specifications and set mill grinding fineness; load materials into the machine and add or mix chemicals and ingredients; use the controls to start, stop, or adjust crushing, grinding, polishing, or mixing equipment; observe equipment operation to ensure continuous, safe, and efficient flow and to detect faults in time; watch auxiliary equipment such as pumps and conveyors, clear blocked material with tools, and check chain, belt, or auger wear; weigh or measure materials and products at intervals, inspect visually and by feel and with test equipment, and collect samples for laboratory testing; judge and remove nonconforming product per specifications and readjust the equipment to eliminate the problem; record operation, test, and production data on the designated forms, clean and adjust and maintain equipment, and report needed repairs.
This occupation focuses on setting up, operating, and watching crushing, grinding, and polishing equipment per specifications; industrial machinery mechanics and maintenance workers machinery specialize in equipment repair and servicing; rolling machine setters, operators, and tenders focus on roll forming; cutting, punching, and press machine setters, operators, and tenders focus on punching and shearing forming; grinding, lapping, polishing, and buffing machine tool setters, operators, and tenders focus on machine tool grinding of workpieces; extruding, forming, pressing, and compacting machine setters, operators, and tenders focus on extrusion and forming. Similar names do not mean duties or authorization can be interchanged.
The core output is verifiable operation and quality records: setting up and running equipment per work orders, weighing and measurement data, sampling and laboratory submission records, anomaly and repair report records, and records of judging conforming and nonconforming product per specifications, not the machine is turning.
Low-risk check: use a fictional work order and de-identified data to complete one exercise of setting mill grinding fineness per specifications, simulating one weighing and sampling, writing one operation and anomaly record, and explaining the stop and report order; it only gauges work preference, does not operate real equipment, does not enter a real workshop, does not generate production instructions, and is not equivalent to employer hiring or on-site operating authorization.
Judgment center: whether, under conditions where equipment safety, machine guarding and lockout/tagout, product quality, and environmental requirements are all binding, setup and adjustment, operation watching, weighing and sampling, anomaly reporting, and records can be turned into verifiable, handover-ready, and traceable operation records.
Work rhythm is set by the production schedule, continuous equipment operation, and batch intervals; the equipment, materials, and shifts differ markedly across settings such as mineral processing, building materials, chemicals, food, and recycled materials.
Similar adjacent position names do not mean the same duties; when comparing, first look at whether the object is operation and watching of crushing, grinding, and polishing equipment, equipment repair, metal forming, rolling, or general machining, and whether the position carries equipment repair authorization or process setup responsibility.
Equipment monitoring and recording tools can be treated as controlled status prompts and filing aids, but tool output cannot be treated as unverified equipment status or a quality judgment basis, and automatically generated content cannot be used directly as an operation record or a production decision.
Fit judgment should combine real workshop observation, training feedback, and one's own condition, and is not replaced by an interest type or one test.
All paper exercises on this page use fictional material; in real work, machine guarding and lockout/tagout, dust, noise, and chemical protection, and equipment operation and environmental requirements must follow safety procedures, employer rules, and applicable provisions.
Proceeding per the production schedule: after taking over the shift, first verify the work order and specifications and check the equipment status and safety guards,
Judgment three: are materials and products weighed, measured, and sampled at intervals?
Collaboration and reporting relationships|Collaborate with the shift leader and repair and inspection staff within their authority,
The equipment, materials, cleanliness requirements, and shifts differ markedly across settings such as mineral processing, building materials, chemicals, food, and recycled materials, and cannot be generalized from the occupation name.
Judgment six: are anomalies and safety risks stopped and reported?
Setup and adjustment, running materials, and quality records, these three work faces, are editorial summaries, not a fixed statutory order. For this position the current 21Tasks are 13Core and 8Supplemental. The 13Core are observing operation, cleaning, adjusting, and maintaining with hand tools, watching pumps and conveyors, operating controls, reporting needed repairs, weighing and measuring at intervals, recording operation, test, and production data, removing nonconforming product and adjusting equipment, checking chain and auger wear, cleaning the work area, visual and tactile inspection, reading work orders, and clearing blockages with tools; the 8Supplemental are testing samples, silo identification, transferring materials, adding and mixing chemicals and ingredients, sampling for laboratory testing, loading, controlling humidity with valves, and setting mill fineness. Importance scores are not workforce shares, and Core does not mean every shift does all of them or that it is an operating authorization. Clearing blockages and maintenance involve hazardous energy and jurisdictional conditions, and a task directory or supervisor consent cannot replace safety procedures.
Read the work order to determine specifications → set the mill and parameters per specifications → load and add ingredients → start and adjust with the controls → control humidity with valves → confirm the starting status
Setup and adjustment records, specification and parameter verification records
Watch operation and auxiliary equipment → record blockages and wear and report them → clearing and maintenance must verify actual authorization and the energy control procedure → inspect and hand over; this is not an operating step that allows entering a hazardous area once the machine is stopped.
Operation watching records, blockage and wear handling records
Weigh and measure at intervals → visual and tactile inspection → test with test equipment → sample for laboratory testing → judge and remove nonconforming product → record and clean and maintain
Where is the boundary between crushing, grinding, and polishing machine setters, operators, and tenders and the adjacent equipment repair, metal processing, and rolling positions?
This table compares crushing, grinding, and polishing machine setters, operators, and tenders one by one with the adjacent industrial machinery mechanics, maintenance workers machinery, rolling machine setters, operators, and tenders, metal and plastic cutting, punching, and press machine setters, operators, and tenders, and grinding, lapping, polishing, and buffing machine tool setters, operators, and tenders across seven items, namely core purpose, main object and basis, core process, main output, responsible party, collaboration and supervision, and conclusion boundaries: adjacent positions all work in equipment or metal processing settings, but the object, whether they carry equipment repair responsibility, and the processing method and process object do not shift just because positions are adjacent; when comparing, verify item by item against actual duties and the process involved.
Set up and run crushing, grinding, and polishing equipment per work orders and specifications, ensuring continuous material flow, products that meet specifications, and verifiable operation records.
Core purposes of adjacent positions: industrial machinery mechanics and maintenance workers machinery are responsible for repairing, maintaining, and troubleshooting equipment and machinery; rolling machine setters, operators, and tenders roll metal and plastic; cutting, punching, and press machine setters, operators, and tenders are responsible for punching and shearing forming; grinding, lapping, polishing, and buffing machine tool setters, operators, and tenders are responsible for machine tool grinding, lapping, polishing, and buffing.
Crushing, grinding, and polishing equipment, materials and ingredients, and products, as well as operation and quality records; the basis is work orders and production specifications, equipment operating and safety procedures, and machine guarding and lockout/tagout requirements.
Objects and bases of adjacent positions: machinery and equipment and repair procedures (industrial machinery mechanics, maintenance workers machinery), metal and plastic stock and rolling processes (rolling machine setters, operators, and tenders), sheet metal and punching and shearing dies (cutting, punching, and press machine setters, operators, and tenders), and machine tools and grinding processes (grinding, lapping, polishing, and buffing machine tool setters, operators, and tenders).
Work order and setup, operation watching, weighing and inspection records, anomaly reporting, and maintenance are editorial task summaries; before clearing and maintenance enter a hazardous area, the specific energy isolation verification and restart conditions must be verified separately.
Processes of adjacent positions: diagnose and dismantle and repair equipment (industrial machinery mechanics, maintenance workers machinery), control shape per the rolling process (rolling machine setters, operators, and tenders), form by punching and shearing per the die (cutting, punching, and press machine setters, operators, and tenders), and process per the grinding process (grinding, lapping, polishing, and buffing machine tool setters, operators, and tenders).
Setup and operation records, weighing and measurement data, sampling and laboratory submission records, anomaly and repair report records, and product judgment records.
Outputs of adjacent positions: servicing and maintenance records (industrial machinery mechanics, maintenance workers machinery), rolled formed products (rolling machine setters, operators, and tenders), punched formed parts (cutting, punching, and press machine setters, operators, and tenders), and ground machined parts (grinding, lapping, polishing, and buffing machine tool setters, operators, and tenders).
Operators and watchers in this occupation are responsible for setting up and running per specifications, watching equipment status, and truthfully weighing, recording, and judging products; equipment repair authorization and process responsibility must follow employer procedures and are not decided unilaterally by them.
Responsible parties of adjacent positions: repair staff are responsible for equipment repair quality; metal processing positions are responsible for their own forming and processing quality.
For anomalies or blockages, first handle the danger per the real equipment procedure and seek help, record and hand over beyond-authority repairs to the responsible person; a machine stop is not energy isolation, and entering a hazardous area to clear blockages or perform maintenance requires verifying isolation, stored energy, verification, and restart procedures, and must not be done on a supervisor's consent alone.
Collaboration of adjacent positions: repair staff collaborate with production and engineering departments; metal processing positions collaborate with process and quality inspection staff.
Similar job titles do not mean the same duties: whether the object is operation and watching of crushing, grinding, and polishing equipment, equipment repair, metal rolling, punching and shearing forming, or machine tool grinding, and whether they carry repair authorization or process setup responsibility, determine the scope of duties and the assessment method, and cannot be swapped by name.
The preparation levels and authorization conditions of adjacent positions do not apply to this occupation and must be verified item by item against each occupation's official material and the rules of the institution concerned.
Six recurring professional judgments: whether the setup and parameters match the work order specifications; whether the equipment operating status is watched continuously with anomalies found in time; whether materials and products are weighed, measured, and sampled for laboratory testing at intervals; whether products are judged per specifications and nonconforming items handled correctly; whether records are truthful, complete, and traceable; and whether, on equipment anomalies, blockages, or safety risks, the machine is stopped, reported, and protected per procedures.
The production specifications must be determined from the work order, and mill grinding fineness and machine parameters set correctly; a setup error may cause nonconforming product or equipment damage.
Equipment operation must be observed to ensure continuous, safe, and efficient flow and to detect faults, blockages, or wear in time; a lapse in watching may cause downtime and material loss.
Materials, ingredients, or products must be weighed and measured at intervals, inspected visually and by feel and with test equipment, and samples collected for laboratory testing; missed inspection may let nonconforming product flow into the next process.
Products must be judged conforming or not per established standards, nonconforming items removed, and the equipment readjusted to eliminate the problem; a wrong judgment may affect product quality and customer trust.
Judgment four: is the product judged per specifications and handled correctly?
Operation, test, and production data must be filled in promptly and truthfully on the designated forms, and silo identification must be clear; missing or false records will affect traceability and process improvement.
Judgment five: are records truthful, complete, and traceable?
For anomalies or blockages, first handle the danger per the real equipment procedure and seek help, record and hand over beyond-authority repairs to the responsible person; a machine stop is not energy isolation, and entering a hazardous area to clear blockages or perform maintenance requires verifying isolation, stored energy, verification, and restart procedures, and must not be done on a supervisor's consent alone.
Setup and adjustment|Set up and adjust machines per specifications|Read the work order to determine production specifications, set mill grinding fineness and machine parameters per specifications, load materials into the machine and add or mix chemicals and ingredients, and use the controls to start, stop, or adjust crushing, grinding, polishing, or mixing equipment.
Core observing operation, watching pumps and conveyors, checking chain and auger wear, and clearing blockages with tools; clearing blockages with tools is not the same as reaching into a hazardous area while running, and the actual energy control and authorization must be verified separately.
Supplemental transferring materials, supplies, and products, loading, controlling humidity with valves, and adding ingredients, handled per the specific equipment and material conditions, and not performed by all positions at the same time.
Core weighing and measuring at intervals and visual and tactile inspection; testing samples with test equipment and taking samples to the laboratory are Supplemental, and sampling contact must respect the real process and hazard conditions.
Core removing nonconforming product and readjusting equipment; silo mixture identification is Supplemental. Judgment and adjustment follow the work order and real authority, and do not mean out-of-specification product may be released at will.
Records and maintenance|Record data and maintain equipment|Record operation, test, and production data on the designated forms, clean and adjust and maintain equipment, report needed repairs to a supervisor, and clean the work area.

What technologies are often mentioned in production settings?
The O*NET software directory has 5 categories: Email, SAP, Office, Excel, and Word; for the full year 2025 the shares of the four Lightcast recruitment keywords Excel/Office/Word/SAP are all Not available, and undisclosed items are not filled in as 0. A directory is not recruitment frequency or this position's generative AI adoption, efficiency, or replacement.
Can work context statistics show that AI will replace crushing, grinding, and polishing machine setters, operators, and tenders?
No. The O*NET work context percentages describe tasks and environmental conditions (such as protective equipment use, exposure to noise and hazardous conditions, hand manipulation and standing, and degree of automation), and do not contain data on technology adoption, headcount, or changes in individual income.
Will technological change directly reduce positions in this occupation?
How does the official projection describe employment for this occupation?
US 51-9021.00 single-occupation BLS2025—2035 projection: 26,600 employed in 2025 and a 2035 projection of 26,100, a decline of 2% (Decline label -1% or lower), with 2,300 average annual openings including growth and replacement. Openings are not a ten-year total, annual net additions, or an individual hiring probability, and they do not prove AI causality.
Can task exposure research predict that positions in this occupation will disappear?
No. Task exposure measurement shows how close tasks are to technology and does not give a replacement date or a single-occupation prediction.
Which governance requirements cannot be omitted when introducing AI tools?
Roles and responsibilities should be clarified, access and operation records retained, and human oversight points set; a governance framework does not replace the institutional requirements of machine guarding and lockout/tagout, dust, noise, and chemical protection, and product quality.

Equipment anomalies and repair reporting
Editorial trial direction: tools can provide information, drafts, or inspection prompts, and actual equipment functions and this position's effects must be verified; traditional automation is not generative AI.
Confirming the anomaly, judging whether it can keep running, and deciding handling and reporting are the responsibility of people.
Confirm the equipment and information sources
Check that equipment status, materials and ingredients, measurement data, and the work order are consistent, and confirm that the information used by tool prompts is real and reliable; if an input error is actually adopted and not corrected, it may enter production.
Keep human review for setup and adjustment, anomaly judgment, product judgment, and shutdown decisions, and do not replace on-site judgment with tool output.
Setup, operation, measurement, and anomaly records are retained per employer procedures and confirmed by the responsible person, with the time and basis written down, traceable to the original data and the work order.
Anomaly handling and escalation
For anomalies or blockages, first handle the danger per the real equipment procedure and seek help, record and hand over beyond-authority repairs to the responsible person; a machine stop is not energy isolation, and entering a hazardous area to clear blockages or perform maintenance requires verifying isolation, stored energy, verification, and restart procedures, and must not be done on a supervisor's consent alone.
The monitoring, inspection, and control equipment used must be operated by personnel trained and authorized for them; unverified tool output must not replace safety procedures and employer rules.
Over-reliance on monitoring or automatic judgment
A wrong prompt may cause equipment or quality anomalies to be missed; the duties of personnel and the company cannot be replaced by tools, and the service provider's liability is verified per law and contract and is not uniformly asserted to be absent.
Treat tool output as a prompt, combine it with on-site observation, and let the responsible person make the final setup, shutdown, and judgment decisions per procedures with a trace kept.
Machine guarding and lockout/tagout being ignored
Bypassing guards to rush progress or not performing lockout/tagout may cause serious injury.
Dust, noise, and chemical exposure
Long-term exposure to dust, noise, and chemicals may cause health harm, and the specific effects depend on the actual exposure and control conditions.
Wear protective equipment per procedures, use ventilation and noise reduction measures, and take part in occupational health examinations.
Distortion of records and judgments
Missing or false records or a wrong judgment may let nonconforming product flow into the next process.
Record promptly and truthfully per procedures and judge per standards, keep the basis, and correct errors promptly.
Improper handling of blockages and equipment anomalies may cause equipment damage or personal injury.

Therefore the Chinese wage conclusion is an evidence boundary, not zero income; the US statistics are on this occupation's own basis and also cannot directly replace the income of comparable positions in Mainland China.
Conditional industry background: where the employer's legal entity main industry falls under manufacturing, the NBS2025 urban non-private figure of 113,594 yuan and private figure of 76,055 yuan pre-tax annual average wages can serve as background. Urban legal persons with 5 or more people, excluding sole proprietors and the self-employed; not this position's wage, median, starting wage, percentile, or monthly take-home pay, and the two populations are not mixed; other main industries such as mining and solid waste treatment must be matched to their own industries.
Public basis and gaps for Mainland China crushing, grinding, and polishing equipment operation positions
This position's Chinese wage, quote percentiles, and one-to-one occupation classification mapping were not obtained; it is not inferred that the corresponding occupation does not exist, that the maximum is only industry level, or that it will never be published. Insufficient evidence: this round obtained no verifiable recruitment or quote statistics for Mainland China crushing, grinding, and polishing equipment operation positions; a single enterprise's position pay disclosure cannot represent the national level
The US education response for new hires in this position shows 62% high school or equivalent and 19% less than high school, and unshown remaining items are not filled in as zero. Job Zone1–2/SVP below 6 is a general level, and training from a few days to one year is a general statement, not this position's uniform education, training duration, or a Chinese hiring threshold. The preparation direction on this page is editorial verification, not an education wage grade.
Chinese hiring education, shift work, and health conditions are verified per the specific employer; this round obtained no national uniform conditions or current recruitment sample. China's 2021 safety regulations on dust explosion prevention in industrial and trade enterprises apply to designated industrial and trade enterprises with combustible dust explosion hazards, not to all mine sites or all inorganic dust positions. Articles 8 and 9 require the relevant personnel to pass special training and to have compliant PPE;
Equipment, materials, and specific hazards determine training, protection, and statutory operating conditions; ordinary equipment operation does not automatically grant electrician, welding, or other special operation permits. China's 2021 safety regulations on dust explosion prevention in industrial and trade enterprises apply to designated industrial and trade enterprises with combustible dust explosion hazards, not to all mine sites or all inorganic dust positions. Articles 8 and 9 require the relevant personnel to pass special training and to have compliant PPE; Article 16 requires ignition source prevention in processes such as crushing and grinding; Article 19 requires that the relevant maintenance be restarted only after a specially approved plan, production stoppage, spark-free tools, and the working point temperature returning to normal, among other conditions; it cannot be done on a supervisor's consent alone or simply by pressing the stop button to clear a blockage and restart. Article 10 requires evacuation in fire and explosion response and prohibits measures that may raise dust, and specific equipment operation still follows the actual plan.
Editorial development direction: you can learn about shift leader or section management tasks; on-site experience, equipment knowledge, and appointment requirements are verified against the target unit's rules and announcements, and no evidence of common recruitment requirements was obtained.
Examine the actual production schedule, shift work, shutdown inspection, performance, and contract pay; this round obtained no nationally uniform scheduling and wage system for this position, and general Chinese working hours are not inferred from the US context.
AI task trials do not prove changes in this position's Chinese wages or that occupation-level statistics will never be produced; this round obtained no wage or AI causality for this position.
The Mainland China salary section on this page keeps only the evidence boundary: industry averages are not treated as the occupation wage, US data is not used as a substitute, and no national median, starting wage, or percentile for this occupation is stated.
The starting wage, individual take-home pay, and actual annual hours were not obtained. OEWS is usually annualized on the 2080 standard hour basis, covers paid full-time and part-time workers, and excludes the self-employed and overtime premiums; the US context 65% usually more than 40 hours does not mean the official annual wage includes personal overtime, and it is not applied to all Chinese positions.
Employment scale, projected change, and job openings answer different questions and cannot be mixed into an individual hiring probability.
The industry table only shows the employment distribution under this basis (O*NET lists manufacturing and mining, quarrying, and oil and gas extraction separately, with the rest grouped as other industries) and does not represent the wages of all employers; wage differences across industries, shifts, and regions should be checked against the specific position and region.
The US 2025 five-year and hourly percentiles have been verified, and current quotes for specific states and regions were not obtained; the wage and the 2025—2035 employment projection are read separately, and this is not an individual quote or a full-time-only basis.
How should the wages and employment of US crushing, grinding, and polishing machine setters, operators, and tenders be read?
Wage percentiles and the annual wage basis
The median indicates the midpoint position of the distribution: under this basis nationwide, half of workers are below and half above this value; it is not an average starting wage and does not mean it is reached on entry.
Questions to ask when reading these numbers
2025 annual percentiles 36520/40430/48540/60040/69240 US dollars, hourly 17.56/19.44/23.34/28.87/33.29; percentiles are not skill grades or an individual's monthly take-home pay, and they do not establish wage causation by industry, shift, region, or experience.
Regional wage statistics describe the distribution of the corresponding statistical sample and cannot be taken as an individual quote; the target employer, contract duties, working hours, and pay composition should be verified. This page obtained no evidence of a reasonable individual quote or take-home income.
Which industries is this occupation distributed across?

What factors make income differ for similar positions?
Statistical wages are based on paid positions: whether full-time, whether shift work and overtime are included, and how many hours per week all affect actual take-home income, so hourly wages, shift pay, and annual income cannot substitute for each other; for this occupation 65% report more than 40 hours per week.
Duties under the same occupation name differ considerably: the equipment, materials, and cleanliness requirements of mineral processing, building materials, chemicals, food, and recycled materials correspond to different skills and work intensity.
Editorial wage verification focuses on the employer's industry, region, actual hours, and pay contract, and this round obtained no national causal estimate of industry, shift, or key equipment on this position's wage.
How should the employment projection be read?
OEWS paid full-time and part-time regular pre-tax wages, excluding the self-employed and overtime premiums; usually annualized on the 2080 standard hour basis, not an individual's annual hours. US figures do not replace Chinese wages, and the starting wage and take-home pay were not obtained.
When the equipment is abnormal or stops, handle and report per procedures; O*NET shows 41% record time pressure as occurring every day; staying calm and following procedures is more reliable than pushing through.
Trait descriptions do not diagnose personality, nor do they predict whether someone can handle a specific position.
First verify the workshop environment (noise, dust, vibration) and protection requirements, the intensity of shift work and overtime, and whether you can accept repetitive watching and measuring.
Do not judge hiring or scheduling by communication style, and do not treat emotional descriptions as health conclusions.
Compare item by item with your own tolerable range.
Realistic corresponds to hands-on operation of equipment and materials and on-site work; Conventional corresponds to executing, weighing and recording, and verifying per procedures and specifications. The code comes from the official interest profile, not a personality label.
The interest code published for this occupation on the O*NET summary page is RC: Realistic corresponds to hands-on operation of equipment and materials, and Conventional to executing, weighing, and recording per procedures and specifications. Verify with actual tasks, namely whether you are willing to watch equipment in a workshop per procedures over the long term and record truthfully; an interest code only indicates activity types, does not predict work performance, and is not a hiring standard.
Do your work preferences match crushing, grinding, and polishing machine setters, operators, and tenders?
Fit is not a personality judgment but a comparison with the real requirements of the daily work: watching equipment continuously in a dusty and noisy workshop, setting and adjusting machines per work orders and specifications, weighing and measuring at intervals and recording truthfully, and stopping the machine and reporting on anomalies instead of taking risks and making do—
The interest types and questionnaires in this section only describe experience preferences and do not replace ability, qualification, health conditions, or hiring judgments; they must not be used as hiring, scheduling, or medical examination conclusions.
First use a fictional work order and de-identified data to complete one exercise of setting mill grinding fineness per specifications, simulating one weighing and sampling, writing one operation and anomaly record, and explaining the stop and report order, or one workshop observation, and then judge preference.
Are my interest types close to equipment operation and watching work?
The interest code O*NET publishes for crushing, grinding, and polishing machine setters, operators, and tenders (51-9021.00) is RC: Realistic corresponds to hands-on operation of equipment and materials and on-site work, and Conventional to executing, weighing, and recording per procedures. Treat the code as an activity type cue, not a personality label.
Willing to operate equipment and materials by hand.
Willing to execute per procedures and record truthfully.
Official source: O*NET OnLine 51-9021.00 interest code (updated 2026)
An interest code only indicates activity types, does not predict work performance, and is not a hiring standard.
Do my personality traits help with equipment operation and watching work?
Conscientiousness, calmness, and recording can serve as task-related editorial self-observation; no comparative evidence on this product's validity for this position or the most direct trait relationship was obtained, and these are not hiring thresholds.
Able to set up carefully per specifications and keep reliable records.
Able to stay steady under equipment anomaly and shutdown pressure.
General tool: the Big Five scale describes trait tendencies and has no official occupational matching threshold
Personality preferences (MBTI type)
Can MBTI tell me whether I am suited to watching equipment or doing repair work?
MBTI-type tools describe preferences, not a career allocation tool; the difference between equipment watching and equipment repair is mainly the work format (operating and watching per specifications versus diagnosing and dismantling and repairing equipment), not a preference type. Verify with actual experience.
You can observe whether you are willing to watch equipment per procedures; a preference does not prove operating ability or position fit, and positions are not assigned by MBTI.
You can observe your interest in diagnostic and repair activity, but a preference does not replace repair skill, training, or qualification.
General tool: type preference description, not a career fit assessment
Type results must not be used as a basis for hiring, scheduling, or promotion.
Can the Enneagram help me understand why I want to do equipment operation?
Enneagram-type descriptions are motivation cues: wanting frontline production hands-on work, wanting to master the operation and watching of a certain type of equipment, or wanting stable employment in manufacturing correspond to different choices. Treat it as a questioning tool, not a position conclusion.
Able to state clearly what you want to get from this job.
Willing to test whether the motivation holds up with actual workshop observation and training feedback.
General tool: motivation description, not a career fit assessment
Do not treat motivation descriptions as a career choice conclusion or an employment basis.
What cognitive and operating ability requirements does this occupation have?
The US education response for new hires in this position shows 62% high school or equivalent and 19% less than high school, and unshown remaining items are not filled in as zero. Job Zone1–2/SVP below 6 is a general level, and training from a few days to one year is a general statement, not this position's uniform education, training duration, or a Chinese hiring threshold. General cognitive tools' correspondence with position thresholds and this product's validity were not obtained; actual operation and risk judgment must be assessed per the position.
Able to observe equipment status and find anomalies quickly.
Able to operate and measure steadily per specifications.
General tool: cognitive performance description, no official occupational threshold
Cognitive test results are not used as a hiring standard and do not replace health and physical condition requirements.
Communication and emotional management
Are very strong communication and emotional management abilities needed?
This kind of position requires communicating with the shift leader and repair and inspection staff and handling equipment anomalies; the O*NET survey shows 85% record face-to-face discussions as occurring every day, 36% report continuous contact with others, and 41% record time pressure as occurring every day. Emotional tools only provide a self-observation angle, not a position threshold.
Able to explain equipment conditions and anomalies clearly.
Able to stay calm and handle things under shutdown and quality pressure.
General tool: communication and emotion description, not a position threshold
Crushing and grinding equipment operation direction
The crushing and grinding direction involves setting per specifications, watching, measurement records, and anomaly reporting; the editorial self-question is whether you are willing to experience these tasks, and willingness is not used to infer fit.
Bound by dust, noise, and shift work; consistency is needed across repetitive watching and measuring.
Polishing and surface treatment direction
The polishing direction focuses on surface, fineness, and appearance tasks; the editorial self-question is whether you are willing to experience tactile and visual inspection, and preference is not used to infer fit.
Bound by equipment and process; standards must be maintained in tactile and visual judgment.
Industrial machinery mechanics (adjacent occupation)
Install, repair, and maintain industrial machinery and equipment, diagnosing and eliminating faults.
This is already an adjacent occupation: mechanical and electrical repair ability must be supplemented, and its qualification requirements verified separately.
Maintenance workers, machinery (adjacent occupation)
US machinery maintenance includes dismantling and assembly, replacement, setup operation, servicing and cleaning, and troubleshooting, not uniformly only simple repair; the target ability and qualification are verified separately.
The focus is servicing and repair, and transfer requires supplementing maintenance skills.
Rolling machine setters, operators, and tenders (adjacent occupation)
Set up and operate rolling mills to roll metal or plastic stock into shape.
The processing method is roll forming, and transfer requires supplementing rolling process ability.
Cutting, punching, and press machine setters, operators, and tenders (adjacent occupation)
Set up and operate punching and shearing equipment to punch and shear metal or plastic sheet into shape.
The processing method is punching and shearing and the object is sheet and dies, and transfer requires supplementing the corresponding skills.
Will repeated setup and watching make you lose patience?
Can you accept training and inspection pointing out problems with your setup or records?
Will facing equipment anomalies or shutdown pressure make you flustered?
Would you rather do crushing and grinding, or polishing and surface treatment?
Editorial preparation comparison: crushing and grinding and polishing task differences are verified per the actual equipment, materials, and work order; no employer priority comparison was obtained, and no claim is made about which type values a certain preference more.
Are you willing to communicate frequently with the team and repair staff?
According to the O*NET survey, 85% record face-to-face discussions as occurring every day and 36% report continuous contact with others; you need both frequent communication about equipment conditions and independent watching and measuring.
Can you adapt to a noisy, dusty environment and long periods of standing operation?
O*NET shows that for this occupation 100% wear routine protective equipment every day, 66% use their hands continuously, 41% stand more than half the time, and 37% are exposed to distracting noise every day; people sensitive to the environment or standing should check the work format first.
Can you adapt to shift work and longer hours?
For this occupation 90% report a fixed regular schedule, but 65% report more than 40 hours per week; the production schedule and continuous equipment operation determine busy and slack periods, verified against the specific company.
Are you willing to keep practicing setup, measuring, and safe operation?
The editorial suggestion is to keep training feedback and anomaly reviews as verification material; no comparative evidence that they predict fit better than tests was obtained, and simulation does not grant an operating qualification.
Can an interest or personality test decide whether I am suited to equipment operation?
The tests serve as self-observation clues, and no validity for this position was obtained for the six products; they cannot alone decide hiring, health, or qualification, and the actual position and training must still be verified.
Use the fictional exercises on this page or one workshop observation to verify the real conditions, and compare the observation results item by item with the target direction's object, safety requirements, and authorization boundaries.
Supports tasks, work context, and the interest code; an interest code only indicates activity types and does not constitute a fit conclusion.
Supports employment and projection bases, used to judge occupation scale, not to judge individual fit.
Observation points for the preparation level and industry distribution (O*NET 51-9021.00), not representing a specific employer's hiring conditions.
The O*NET interest questionnaire only describes experience preferences and does not replace ability, qualification, health, or hiring judgments.

Examine the specific dust, noise, and chemicals, engineering controls, actual PPE, and occupational health examination conditions; a uniform examination cycle for everyone is not inferred. China's 2021 safety regulations on dust explosion prevention in industrial and trade enterprises apply to designated industrial and trade enterprises with combustible dust explosion hazards, not to all mine sites or all inorganic dust positions. Articles 8 and 9 require the relevant personnel to pass special training and to have compliant PPE;
Identify hot surfaces and hot materials per procedures, wear heat-insulating protection, keep a safe distance, and use tools for the work.
Record promptly and truthfully per procedures and keep the basis, judge per established standards, and correct and report errors promptly.
Arrange rotation and breaks between tasks per procedures, use assistive tools, keep a correct posture, and report promptly and seek help if feeling unwell.
What actual work risks do crushing, grinding, and polishing machine setters, operators, and tenders face?
Editorial potential-risk observation: verify the machinery and hazardous energy, guarding, dust, noise, chemicals, and high temperature, blockages, and quality record scenarios; hazards depend on the specific exposure and control conditions, and no relative accident rate or cumulative health effect during rush or shutdown periods was obtained.
The US O*NET tasks and context support the risk scenarios, and the percentages are not accident or disease rates; OSHA1910.147 and .212 hold to their US scope of application, Chinese combustible dust hazard industrial and trade rules are verified separately, and OSHA or NIST is not treated as mandatory Chinese law. The specific process emergency procedure was not obtained, and the editorial control direction does not grant a work permit.
This section only explains hazards and control directions and does not replace production safety regulations, industry procedures, machine guarding and lockout/tagout systems, and product quality requirements, nor does it constitute an occupational health diagnosis, a liability finding, or legal opinion.
First look at the work context and operating conditions
Positions operating and watching crushing, grinding, and polishing equipment
O*NET shows that for this occupation 41% are exposed to hazardous equipment every day and 42% are exposed to hazardous conditions every day; handling blockages while the equipment is running or energized, failing to perform lockout/tagout, or missing guards may cause entanglement, crushing, or cutting injuries.
Contact with hazardous equipment and energy may cause serious injury; this position's injury severity distribution was not obtained, so it is not asserted that it is often fatal, and actual isolation and protection follow the applicable rules.
Positions working in crushing and grinding and ingredient handling
In the US ordinary PPE PPE100% daily, and noise 37% daily and 39% weekly but not daily; contaminants 26% monthly but not weekly and 13% never, and unshown remaining levels are not filled in as zero. Dust and chemical exposure must be verified against the specific material concentration, engineering controls, and occupational health conditions, and this is not this position's disease rate. Chinese combustible dust industrial and trade settings have separate explosion prevention requirements.
Can serve as a health risk verification direction; the specific disease, individual effects, and this position's incidence rate were not obtained, and a diagnosis cannot be made from context frequency alone.
High temperature burns and hot surfaces
Positions in contact with grinding, drying, or hot materials
In the US 19% are exposed to very hot or very cold temperatures daily, 28% weekly but not daily, and 20% monthly but not weekly, while 25% never; this is not the incidence of hot surface burns. Actual hot equipment and materials are editorial scenarios, and temperature, contact, and protection must be verified.
High temperature contact may cause burns and discomfort.
Injuries from clearing blockages and materials
Positions that need to clear blockages or transfer materials
Clearing blockages and material transfer are in the Tasks, and entering a hazardous area carries the risk of unexpected startup or stored energy release; a stop or power-off button or a tag already applied does not automatically prove that all energy sources are effectively isolated, and the actual verification and restart procedures are verified separately.
Improper handling when clearing a blockage may cause equipment damage and personal injury.
Positions that need to weigh, measure, sample, and judge products
Failure to weigh and measure at intervals, missed inspection, or missing or false records, or failure to judge per standards and remove nonconforming product, may let nonconforming product flow into the next process and affect traceability and process improvement.
Record or judgment errors bring quality and traceability risks.
The load of long standing and repetitive motion
Positions mainly involving workshop equipment operation and watching
O*NET shows that for this occupation 66% use their hands continuously or almost continuously, 41% stand more than half the time, 31% repeat motions continuously or almost continuously, and 65% work more than 40 hours per week; the editor focuses on the specific conditions of repetitive operation and standing, and no evidence of cumulative musculoskeletal effects for this position was obtained.
The editor focuses on the actual duration, posture, and rest conditions of repetitive operation and standing; no evidence of cumulative health effects or individual effects for this position was obtained.

Fictional equipment operation and anomaly handling scenario material (exercise input)
Fictional situation: a crushing, grinding, and polishing machine setter, operator, or tender encounters four problems while on duty. First, a grinding machine develops abnormal vibration and noise during operation and output begins to fall; second, a section of conveyor is blocked by material and production is forced to stop; third, a batch of product measures above the specification upper limit and it must be decided whether to remove the whole batch; fourth, the shift leader asks you to enter the guard enclosure while the equipment holds material to deal with the blockage quickly in order to catch up with the schedule.
Given material: the work order and production specifications; a summary of equipment operating and safety procedures; the machine guarding and lockout/tagout system description; and the measurement and inspection record form.
Not given: the specific threshold for how long abnormal vibration may continue, the energy isolation and confirmation details when clearing a blockage, the rules for judging and releasing out-of-specification product, and the determination of whether entering the guard enclosure for work is within authorized scope. If the exercise needs these conditions, write out your assumptions and the parties you need to confirm with.
Task requirements
Please write a one-page handling and reporting plan: covering assessment and shutdown for an equipment anomaly, safe clearing of a conveyor blockage, judgment and handling of out-of-specification product, and verification and refusal of a request to enter the guard enclosure with material present.
The plan should state which information comes from the given material and which is still an assumption, and explain whether it relies on procedures, the system description, or the work order specifications.
Reference deliverable (derivable from the prompt)
The plan should include: an equipment anomaly (record the vibration and noise phenomenon and the output change, assess and shut down for inspection per procedures, report to repair staff and the supervisor, and do not dismantle and repair on your own); blockage clearing (first stop the machine and isolate energy, confirm the equipment will not start, then clear per procedures with tools, and do not handle it bare-handed while running); out-of-specification product (judge and segregate per standards, record the measurement data and handle per procedures, and consult per authorization if release is needed rather than deciding on your own); entering the guard enclosure with material present (explain that this request violates machine guarding and lockout/tagout procedures and exceeds authority, refuse and report to the supervisor, and propose the alternative of handling it after shutdown); and handover (write clearly the status of the four matters, the actions taken, and the items awaiting confirmation).
The reference deliverable only lists the elements that should be included and does not require wording identical to the example; being able to explain the basis for the judgment is enough.
Boundaries and conclusions that cannot be inferred
This question only tests equipment anomaly judgment, safety protection and lockout/tagout awareness, and quality judgment and authorization checking awareness; it does not evaluate whether the handling of a real case is compliant, nor does it constitute an operating permit, a liability finding, or legal opinion.
Real production data or personal information that has not been de-identified must not be used; where real equipment operation, repair, and safety handling are involved, safety procedures, company rules, and applicable provisions must be followed.
Day 1: read one public material
Find a public material on crushing and grinding or equipment safety education, mark three key safety points and the corresponding protection, and write down the points you want to confirm.
Day 2: work through one work order setup
Using a fictional work order, write out the equipment setup and grinding fineness steps, the startup order, and the watching points, and note the conditions that need confirmation.
Day 3: write one weighing and sampling record
Using fictional measurement data, record weighing or measurement results at intervals, sampling for laboratory testing, and deviation handling notes.
Day 4: write one anomaly and shutdown record
Using a fictional case, write a shutdown, handling, and reporting record for an equipment anomaly or blockage, including the basis, limits, and the party it was handed to.
Day 5: write one protection and authorization check record
Using a fictional case, write a check and refusal record for a request to enter the guard enclosure with material present, including the basis, limits, and alternative plan.
Day 6: have someone else review using only the material
Have a peer review your judgment using only your setup, records, and handling plan, and record the questions they raise.
Day 7: decide whether to continue
Return to the judgment checklist on this page and write down three reasons you are willing to continue and two conditions that require caution.

The current tasks of 9 adjacent occupations support the ability comparison, and some maintenance, operation, and processing tasks overlap; statutory special qualifications and authorization are verified separately, and a directory does not grant authorization.
Process monitoring and data acquisition systems, in-line inspection, and automatic control can reduce part of the manual observation, weighing, and recording work; but setting up and adjusting per the work order, judging equipment anomalies and blockages, handling wear and repair reporting, visual and tactile inspection of products, and on-site safety protection still depend on people and are bound by safety procedures and employer rules. O*NET shows that for this occupation 28% are highly automated, 36% moderately automated, and 25% not automated at all; technical exposure does not equal organizational adoption or job disappearance.
What can be verified is change at the task level: three types of tasks, namely operation monitoring and data records, weighing and measuring and in-line inspection, and equipment anomaly and repair reporting, can be partly taken on by tools; this page has no single-occupation adoption rate or replacement data.
Setting up and adjusting per the work order, observing equipment status and judging anomalies, carrying out safety protection and lockout/tagout, weighing and measuring and judging products, and the ability to record and report truthfully.
In the US 2025 wage data the median annual wage is 48,540 US dollars and the percentiles are 36,520/40,430/48,540/60,040/69,240 US dollars (51-9021.00 single-occupation basis), and hourly wages are published as well; figures broken down by state or region must be queried on the O*NET local wage page by region and period and cannot be taken as an individual quote; no occupation-level wage figure was obtained for Mainland China, and this page handles it as a gap.
The US preparation level is Job Zone 1-2 (SVP below 6.0), usually requiring a high school diploma or equivalent and providing from a few days to one year of on-the-job training; comparable positions in Mainland China are mostly recruited by the employer and require adapting to shift work and the workshop environment and accepting equipment operation and safety training, with specifics per the target unit's rules.
The United States has no unified national license, and on-the-job training is mostly provided by the employer, with certification and training information also available for queries; Mainland China crushing, grinding, and polishing equipment operation positions mostly handle position and safety training per the employer's requirements; equipment repair or process setup authorization is determined by company procedures; specific conditions are verified against the target unit's requirements.
First use the fictional exercises on this page to complete one round of setting mill grinding fineness per specifications, simulating one weighing and sampling, writing one operation and anomaly record, and explaining the stop and report order, or one workshop observation, and then verify the target direction's object, safety requirements, and authorization boundaries.
The O*NET summary and employment trends page (based on the BLS 2024—2034 projection) shows about 28,700 people in this occupation in 2024, with a projection label of Decline (a decline of -1% or lower), and about 2,700 openings including growth and replacement over the decade; an overall declining projection still produces replacement openings, and the work is mainly standing operation and watching in a workshop, and must be verified against local manufacturing and mining demand, company equipment, and shift arrangements.
FermatMind career content editorial; source verification of the nine modules in this round
Nine-module: the O*NET51-9021.00 tasks, context, education, and interests, and the 2025 wage and industry and the 2025—2035 projection are used separately; China's NBS conditional industry background and the combustible dust industrial and trade regulations and the applicable US OSHA machinery and hazardous energy rules each hold to their jurisdiction scope. Directories and recruitment keywords, the ILO, and NIST do not replace AI effects for this position, and a certification query result does not prove the absence of a nationwide qualification.
Nine-module verification 2026-10-09; out-of-scope items were not re-reviewed, and each source's period and access boundaries are in the register.
