A reading of four self-descriptions, with context and choice.
Read laughter, humor in gloomy situations and self-perceived company through an ordinary mishap; distinguish levity from comedy talent or popularity.
First make all 96 selections. Each part has exactly four items: two positively and two negatively keyed. Valid ratings run from 1 Very inaccurate to 5 Very accurate; reverse items use six minus the rating. Only four valid ratings produce that part’s raw sum of 4–20 and its one-decimal mean, the sum divided by four, from 1–5. Voluntary nonresponse or inability to judge is never zero-filled or replaced with a midpoint; only that part remains insufficient. IPIP’s general instructions use keyed sums. Mean display, mixed order, NA and the all-four requirement are website presentation and completeness conventions. All 24 parts remain visible without a moral total, percentile, six-virtue total or highest-score assignment. Equal values remain equal. A 0.1 gap establishes neither significance, ability nor change, and no five signature strengths are automatically assigned.
What these four items cover
The four items concern using laughter to brighten others’ days, retaining humor in gloomy situations and being known as humorous or enjoyable company. The latter remain your account of others’ views, not collected observer ratings. They test neither joke writing, stage performance nor every humor style, and cannot establish another person’s comfort.
Higher, lower and differing answers
A higher mean indicates stronger endorsement of these playful and humorous descriptions. Lower endorsement may involve a serious style, different tastes or reluctance to call yourself entertaining. Quietly appreciating humor can differ from making people laugh publicly. A single mean cannot distinguish these forms or turn a lack of performative humor into a social deficit.
A concrete everyday example
Imagine an empty cardboard box folding crookedly while you prepare a meal. It resembles an odd hat, and you show it to someone who wants to look before returning to the task. The mishap can be amusing or merely something to fix. Nobody needs to laugh along to demonstrate that the relationship is good.
A possible conversation
You could say, “This box looks like a hat to me; I found it funny. You’re busy, so let’s clear the table first.” Stop if the other person finds it unwelcome. Even jokes about objects or your own mishaps call for attention to responses; humor is no exemption from responsibility or permission to continue offending.
Distinctions from related parts
Humor may notice unexpected connections, as curiosity sometimes does, without requiring further investigation. FermatMind’s separate humor-style reflection explores different contexts of use and cannot be converted from these four ratings. Someone can endorse playfulness while listening seriously during an important conversation, without becoming responsible for entertaining every group they join.
Counterexamples and actual conditions
Someone experiencing fatigue, grief or a language transition may find little amusing while still treating people well. Another person can make others laugh while avoiding a concrete issue. The mean cannot establish emotional health, the safety of a group or whether a particular joke was actually welcome to another person.
An optional observation
If you wish, recall an ordinary light moment and note its subject, setting, actual responses and whether the practical matter was still addressed. Do not devise jokes to test others or record and circulate someone’s embarrassment. The note clarifies how you used humor without promising greater charm or improvement on any assessment.

Item source and website edition
English phrases and keying follow the official 96-item IPIP-VIA-R short key attributed to Bluemke, Partsch, Saucier and Lechner (2021), with two positive and two negative items per part. This is neither the older variable-length IPIP-VIA nor the VIA Institute Survey, GACS or a Gallup tool. IPIP places its items, scales and inventories in the public domain, including commercial use. No protected VIA Institute items, algorithms, reports, art or translations are used. FermatMind independently drafted the Chinese trial translation and educational explanations. This website edition has no local validation, norms or established language equivalence. English–German research described by the official key and university record establishes neither Chinese validation nor universal cultural fairness. Scores describe this attempt, not worth, tested ability, diagnosis, hiring or career fit.
