Look at when self-reliance becomes a brief reply, a check or a sharp remark.
Read six observations about handling things alone and checking offers of help, with a worked mean and alternatives to a fixed personality label.
This guide reads six direct frequency ratings about recent choices. A complete raw sum can range from six to thirty, with the descriptive mean shown on one to five. A higher mean describes more frequent reports of these actions, rather than hidden motives. Any NA keeps this theme unscored while other complete themes remain visible.
Quote the label, observe the actions
The historical quotation for this guide is “oral-aggressive,” a label in Smith’s 2014 personal interpretation. Guarded Self-Reliance is the everyday heading used for our six original observations. They concern checking an offer, managing a difficulty alone, withholding a request and sometimes using a dry reply. Each action is available to many people in many circumstances. The questionnaire asks whether it occurred recently. It supplies no evidence about childhood care, a concealed need or an enduring explanation of someone’s relationships.
Read the six behaviours separately
A higher mean can combine useful checking with a less useful way of responding. For example, confirming what an offer involves may clarify responsibilities, whereas a cutting remark may leave a practical question unanswered. The result cannot weigh those consequences for you. It also cannot tell whether doing something alone was chosen freely or required by the situation. Read the individual prompts before grouping the answers together. The theme is a convenient heading for this checklist, not an explanation of everything underneath it.
A lower mean leaves several possibilities open
Reporting these behaviours less often may reflect ready access to dependable help, clearer expectations, fewer occasions to ask or another way of communicating. It does not establish that you trust everyone, reveal every need or avoid conflict well. The six items do not ask enough to decide that. A low mean can be read simply as a low frequency for the listed actions during four weeks. You can retain that narrow statement without constructing a more flattering or more critical personality story.
Being careful is different from sounding dismissive
A person may often check the conditions of an offer while rarely making a sharp remark. Another may ask few questions but respond tersely when already overloaded. The average can conceal that difference. Write down the setting when a distinction matters: who knew the task, what was offered and whether there was enough time to explain. Several other themes may also fit an episode. Their means are kept separate because the item sets are different, rather than being ranked as competing styles.
Calculate without assigning a motive
Suppose the six ratings are four, four, three, two, two and five. Their sum is twenty; twenty divided by six gives 3.3333…, displayed as 3.33. The display summarises the ordered frequency choices and does not estimate a probability or identify what you secretly wanted. All six valid ratings are necessary in this edition. If you cannot judge one prompt and select NA, the personal sum and mean are withheld, instead of being estimated from the remaining five responses.
A short reply may have a practical reason
Consider Ren, who is preparing a shared draft and declines an offer of help because the agreed handover is later that afternoon. The reply is brief, but the arrangement is clear to everyone involved. A similar reply in another setting might leave a willing collaborator confused. Neither version proves an inner conflict or a lack of care. The observable question is what was communicated and how the arrangement worked. A score cannot supply that missing conversation or decide which relationship interpretation is correct.
Clarify one response in your own notes
Recall one recent offer of help and privately separate the offer’s practical details from your response to its tone. Was there a question you wanted answered, a boundary you wanted to keep or simply a task you preferred doing alone? If you want an experiment, draft a clearer response for a future ordinary situation, without sending anything or having to accept help. Check whether it states the actual condition more precisely. The aim is a usable description, not a lower score or a forced display of trust.
Use the original reflection within its limits
Smith’s 2014 article provides the quoted historical vocabulary, with its author’s own interpretation. The present six prompts and full guide are newly written, as part of our forty-eight-item bilingual edition. They describe frequency during the past four weeks and carry direct codes from one to five. Six valid ratings produce a raw sum and its unrounded mean; any NA withholds that theme. Two decimals are a display choice, not evidence of interval precision. Neither the historical theory nor a new item set supplies independent validation or a population norm.
