Find the function before choosing the article
Review seven written tasks on subject and object case, fixed prepositions, spatial direction and genitive forms.
The count is out of seven supplied choices. It is not a CEFR level, vocabulary-size estimate or certificate.
Start with the noun phrase’s job
A dictionary article records grammatical gender, but a sentence can require a different case form. In a fresh pair, Der Hund wartet and Ich sehe den Hund refer to the same masculine noun while giving it different grammatical functions. Identify the subject or the object before choosing an ending. The quiz supplies gender where it is needed, so this section separates using that information from recalling a noun’s gender. Getting these particular choices right does not demonstrate that every unfamiliar German noun is already known.
Read gender, number and case together
The definite article varies with gender, number and case, and some written forms occur in more than one cell of its paradigm. Der can name masculine nominative or feminine dative, for example. Do not assign one permanent meaning to that string without its noun phrase. A useful unscored exercise is to label the supplied gender and number, state the required case, and then choose the corresponding article. This gives a reason for a form rather than a guess based on how familiar the sentence sounds.
Let the relevant preposition govern its phrase
In the uses practised here, mit governs dative and für governs accusative. A fresh pair such as mit dem Lehrer and für den Lehrer changes the article because the preposition changes the required case. Both phrases can concern a person; that fact alone does not make both dative. Learn the construction with its trigger rather than an English or Chinese translation that hides the case. The guide discusses these specified patterns, not every idiomatic combination or every historical variant of a preposition.
Distinguish location from destination
With the specified spatial use of in, a location and a destination take different cases. Die Tasche liegt in der Küche locates the bag, while Ich lege die Tasche in die Küche gives the destination of placing it. “Something is moving” is not a sufficient rule: walking around inside a room can still be located in that room. Ask what the phrase expresses and read the verb construction. Verb-selected prepositional complements can need their own lexical information rather than a universal motion shortcut.
Notice an explicitly requested genitive
When an exercise gives genitive and a neuter singular noun phrase, des is the relevant definite article. In the new phrase die Farbe des Autos, the article and the supplied noun ending work together. Do not swap the article for dem simply because both words can be related in meaning. At the same time, this pattern does not mean every ownership or association in every register must be expressed in exactly one way. The quiz asks for the stated standard written construction, not a ranking of all regional alternatives.
Change one trigger and explain the new form
For further unscored practice, start with a noun whose gender is supplied in a trusted vocabulary note. Build a simple subject sentence, then a direct-object sentence, then one phrase with mit and another with für. Explain which property changed at each step and which stayed the same. If you do not know the noun’s own ending, check it separately rather than hiding that uncertainty. New examples test whether you can apply the distinction after reading the keys instead of only recognising a sentence from this fixed bank.
Keep seven article decisions in perspective
Each matching answer contributes one correct item, with no speed weighting or partial credit. This seven-item section does not estimate a CEFR level, measure listening, or assess spontaneous speaking and writing. Every valid complete attempt receives all explanations and all four full guides, even at zero correct. German stimuli and answer options stay German in both interfaces; the explanatory language changes. After seeing the key, a stronger retake may reflect recall, so use a fresh example before treating it as evidence of transferable understanding.
