Self-reassurance and support
This part concerns being able to remember positive things about yourself, forgive yourself, offer care and encouragement, and still feel acceptable when things go wrong. Support can include taking responsibility and asking another person for help.
Eight numeric responses produce a sum of 8–40 and a mean of 1–5. A larger value means greater endorsement of these supportive responses. A smaller value does not diagnose a deficiency, and a larger one does not establish safety or remove other difficulties.
Support that can make room for what went wrong
- Self-reassurance in these statements includes reminding yourself of positive things, finding it possible to forgive or like yourself, feeling lovable and acceptable, offering gentleness and care, and encouraging yourself for the future. It is more specific than a claim that you always feel happy or that a difficult event has a positive side.
- A supportive response can acknowledge a mistake, disappointment or real harm. It might sound like recognising what needs repair while remembering that you remain a person who can receive care. These statements do not measure whether the repair succeeds, whether you are morally good or whether other people give you the support you need.
Why an average of 3.38 is not a grade
- For a fictional example, responses of 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, 5, 4 and 3 add to 27. Dividing by eight gives 3.375, displayed as 3.38 to two decimal places. The display rounds the arithmetic; it does not make the questionnaire more precise as a measurement. This result is not 67.5 percent self-reassurance, a pass mark or a position among other people.
- The possible sum is 8–40 because this edition retains the 2019 source’s 1–5 values. There is no target that everyone ought to reach. If any of the eight statements is skipped, both numbers are withheld rather than calculated from the remainder. You can still read this full explanation and the two other parts.
An exam result and the next conversation
- Imagine Mei receives a lower exam result than she expected. She may feel disappointed and still be able to remember other things she has managed, recognise that one result is not her whole identity and ask a teacher which mistakes to review. That combination illustrates self-support alongside a concrete response to an unwelcome event. It does not imply that the disappointment has disappeared.
- A different person might find supportive words difficult to believe or might need someone else’s help before they can plan a next step. That does not make the person a failure at self-reassurance. Use the example to understand the kind of response being asked about, rather than as a script you are supposed to perform or a promise of a better future result.
Being kind does not require dismissing feedback
- Forgiving yourself need not mean deciding that nothing mattered. You can apologise, revise a decision or learn a missing skill while avoiding a judgement that you no longer deserve ordinary care. Likewise, a gentle response need not sound cheerful. It can be a calm, credible acknowledgement of what happened and what you need next.
- Real constraints still matter. Financial strain, discrimination, an unsafe relationship or demands that cannot reasonably be met are not solved by selecting a larger number. Self-support may involve asking for practical assistance, setting a boundary or involving another person. The questionnaire does not determine which action is appropriate for your circumstances.
Try one believable response, if it helps
- An optional reflection is to choose one response that feels believable rather than impressive. After a missed deadline, that might be naming the missed commitment, deciding whom to update and acknowledging that you can ask for help with the remaining work. The point is not to replace one harsh slogan with an equally absolute positive slogan.
- You can also notice whether support is easier through an action than through words: taking a necessary break, asking someone to sit with you or arranging time to discuss a problem. These are examples of possible needs, not additional scored tasks or a treatment recommendation generated from your result. Leave aside any suggestion that is unhelpful or unsafe in your situation.
Read a later result with the same care
- The English statements and key in this edition come from the 2019 article’s Table 1. The Chinese is FermatMind’s working translation, not a claim to reproduce an existing validated Chinese version. A statement may feel more natural or carry a different nuance in one language. Do not assume that a small difference between languages is a real change in your underlying response.
- There is also no fixed numeric recall period in the selected source. If you answer again, consider whether the same kinds of situations were in mind and whether you understood the statements similarly. This web edition has no reliable-change threshold or treatment target. A number can support a conversation, but it cannot certify that you are doing self-support correctly.
A resource, not a subtraction from criticism
- A person may recognise self-support and strong self-criticism in different moments, or even around the same setback. The Reassured Self answers are therefore not reversed and added to the other two parts to produce a general badness score. Nor are they subtracted to produce a net wellness score. This page reports the original three groups separately.
- This matters especially when painful or frightening thoughts are also present. Being able to name something positive about yourself does not make another concern disappear. The more useful next step may be to describe both experiences clearly and seek appropriate support, rather than deciding which part has won.
You can receive support before it feels internal
- Finding these statements difficult to endorse is not a personal failure. You can ask a trusted person or qualified mental health professional for support without first learning to reassure yourself. If distress is persistent or disrupts daily life, describe what is hard and what help would make the next step possible. The page cannot decide the cause or the care you need.
- If you may harm yourself now or need urgent medical care, stop the test and contact local emergency services or an emergency department; involve a trusted person if possible. A large self-reassurance value is not proof of safety, and an unscored result is not a reason to delay help. The full support information remains available without answering any statement.
