A pause can name a limit without promising a return
Read five original prompts about requesting space, realistic availability and voluntary readiness, without treating silence or refusal as a defect.
The mean describes reported ways of expressing a pause on relevant occasions. It cannot determine whether a pause was welcome, safe or owed.
Distinguish space from a demand for cooperation
The five prompts concern saying you need time, describing what you can manage, discussing a voluntary readiness check, leaving another person’s feelings their own and giving realistic availability. They do not measure how long a pause should last. A person may need silence without being able to explain it immediately, and a clear explanation does not ensure agreement. The group concerns your reported expressions, not the other person’s duty to accept a schedule or continue the relationship.
A separate five-item example
Responses of 3, 4, 2, 5 and 4 sum to 18, giving 18/5 = 3.6. A larger mean describes more reported occurrences of these particular expressions, not a greater ability to regulate emotions. No item is reversed. If the voluntary-return prompt was irrelevant because you did not want another conversation, use unscored; four numeric responses do not create a mean. The form does not turn a decision to end contact into a low pause score.
Offer realistic information when you freely choose to
For an ordinary disagreement, you might say: “I cannot continue this conversation now. I may have time tomorrow, but I would like us to check whether we both want to return to it.” This states a present limit without manufacturing certainty. A counterexample is promising an exact return to improve a questionnaire result when you cannot or do not want to keep that promise. Another person can want an answer, but that wish does not remove your right to pause or refuse.
Availability is not the same as willingness
Work, caregiving, fatigue, disability, access to privacy and the subject of the disagreement can affect whether an explanation is possible. Being available does not mean consenting to discuss a topic, and needing time does not prove that someone is punishing a partner. This form has no observer data about either situation. It also does not tell you how another person interpreted your words. If useful, keep availability, willingness and safety as separate questions rather than trying to answer all three with one mean.
More explanation is not always the appropriate goal
A higher frequency of explanations can coexist with repeated arguments, while a clear single boundary may require no further discussion. The group is therefore not a communication-quality scale. Pausing does not guarantee a later resolution, and returning does not make a pause legitimate. These four editorial areas can occur in another order, recur or be absent. Equal means across them remain equal numerical descriptions, not evidence of a balanced process or a fixed fight style.
No opportunity is different from never
If you had relevant occasions and the statement did not occur, never is a numeric answer. If there was no occasion, you cannot judge or you prefer not to answer, choose unscored. All five numeric answers are needed for this group. An all-unscored completion remains a valid way to finish without a personal mean. Full public guides can also be read before starting. Nothing requires you to contact someone to obtain an opportunity that the questionnaire asks about.
A self-report is not an observed cooling-down task
The research background distinguishes recovery after conflict from resolving the issue itself. It does not validate these five statements, the response anchors or the four-week recall window. This original edition has no established norms, reliability, language equivalence or outcome prediction. Neither a pause mean nor its change certifies progress. The test cannot diagnose withdrawal, an attachment pattern or coercion, and it cannot infer the reasons for another person’s silence from your answers.
Keep the option to end here
You might privately prepare one short sentence about what you can manage now, with no obligation to send it. If an ordinary later conversation is something you want, you may suggest a voluntary check-in rather than an unconditional promise. You may instead decide that no further contact is wanted. In unsafe situations you need not explain, negotiate, offer a return time or gain agreement before protecting yourself. A general result link does not change any of those choices.
