Read the component without turning it into a personal label
These four items ask whether, during difficulty, you can place inadequacy and failure within a broader human experience. They concern remembering that other people also struggle, without claiming that everyone has the same resources, risks or history. This is a way of relating to a difficult experience; it does not measure social popularity, the size of a support network or whether your circumstances are fair.
All 4 numeric responses are required. Raw and keyed means are the same. No bands or population ranks.
What this component asks
These four items ask whether, during difficulty, you can place inadequacy and failure within a broader human experience. They concern remembering that other people also struggle, without claiming that everyone has the same resources, risks or history. This is a way of relating to a difficult experience; it does not measure social popularity, the size of a support network or whether your circumstances are fair.
Read frequency and direction
A larger raw mean reflects more reported recognition of shared human difficulty. A smaller mean reflects less of that recognition in these statements, without proving selfishness or actual social isolation. You may recognise common experience and still need practical help or a boundary. Common humanity is not a demand to compare whose suffering is worse or to dismiss an experience because someone else also suffers.
A rejected application without a universal story
Imagine an application is rejected. “Other people also face rejection” can keep the event from becoming evidence that you alone are inadequate. It does not mean everyone encounters the same barriers or that the rejection was justified. “Everyone gets rejected, so stop being upset” dismisses the person rather than acknowledging common humanity. The questionnaire cannot tell which external barriers existed in that situation.
Add a connecting sentence without erasing detail
Privately name one difficult feeling and add a modest connecting statement, such as “I am not the only person who finds rejection painful.” Then name one fact specific to your circumstances and any support you need. A counterexample is forcing gratitude, comparing hardships or telling yourself that needing help is unreasonable. The exercise is optional and does not promise relief, belonging or a particular score change.
Arithmetic, missing answers and close values
- Items 3, 7, 10, 15 form this 4-item part. All are positive-keyed. Add the original responses and divide by 4. The raw and keyed means are identical; for example, a sum of 12 gives 3.00. This part is one of six equally weighted means in the overall calculation.
- Equal or nearby means do not identify a winning trait, prove that two experiences are equivalent or establish a meaningful change. Compare the situations behind your own answers privately, without ranking people. One skipped answer withholds that part and the overall mean; other fully answered parts still have means. No skipped item is zero, and no missing answer is estimated. This strict completeness rule is a website policy, not a validated missing-data threshold.
Source and an optional next step
- This uses the 26-item Self-Compassion Scale, with attribution to Neff (2003), and the current official mean-of-six-means scoring key. The permission letter allows use for any purpose with citation; the official FAQ permits translation. This is copyrighted work used under that permission, not public-domain material. The Chinese items are a new FermatMind working translation, without empirical validation or established cross-language equivalence. Results are for voluntary adult self-reflection, without diagnosis, employment selection or a claim to measure personal worth.
- The full guide is free and public before answering, including when this part has no personal mean. You may finish here. A separate self-esteem assessment asks a different question about reported global self-regard; this SCS mean does not convert into that score. Optional drafts remain in this tab for at most 24 hours. Copying shares only a public title and link, never these answers or personal numbers.
