Read the component without turning it into a personal label
These four SCS items concern balanced awareness, keeping perspective and approaching feelings with curiosity and openness during difficulty. Here mindfulness is this specific self-report part, not a test of meditation skill, concentration span or a complete measure of mindfulness in daily life. Keeping perspective does not require feeling calm, suppressing emotion or denying the seriousness of an event.
All 4 numeric responses are required. Raw and keyed means are the same. No bands or population ranks.
What this component asks
These four SCS items concern balanced awareness, keeping perspective and approaching feelings with curiosity and openness during difficulty. Here mindfulness is this specific self-report part, not a test of meditation skill, concentration span or a complete measure of mindfulness in daily life. Keeping perspective does not require feeling calm, suppressing emotion or denying the seriousness of an event.
Read frequency and direction
A larger raw mean reflects more reported balanced awareness on the stated items, while a smaller mean reflects less. It does not prove stronger emotional regulation, better decisions or freedom from distress. An urgent situation may demand action rather than extended reflection. The result cannot determine whether taking time to observe was feasible, safe or useful in a particular moment.
Feeling disappointment without making it the whole picture
After a disagreement, someone might notice “I am hurt and angry; I do not yet know what the other person intended.” This acknowledges the feeling while keeping an uncertainty visible. “I should feel nothing” suppresses experience, while “This feeling proves every relationship is unsafe” expands it beyond the available facts. These are illustrative statements, not diagnoses or instructions to stay in an unsafe relationship.
Name a feeling and a fact
For a manageable event, you may pause briefly and name a feeling, one observable fact and one thing you do not know. No special breathing method, meditation session or closed eyes are required. A counterexample is using “be mindful” to delay a needed response or tell yourself that anger is forbidden. If reflection increases discomfort, stop and choose practical support or a different activity. A higher number is not the task.
Arithmetic, missing answers and close values
- Items 9, 14, 17, 22 form this 4-item part. All are positive-keyed. Add the original responses and divide by 4. The raw and keyed means are identical; for example, a sum of 12 gives 3.00. This part is one of six equally weighted means in the overall calculation.
- Equal or nearby means do not identify a winning trait, prove that two experiences are equivalent or establish a meaningful change. Compare the situations behind your own answers privately, without ranking people. One skipped answer withholds that part and the overall mean; other fully answered parts still have means. No skipped item is zero, and no missing answer is estimated. This strict completeness rule is a website policy, not a validated missing-data threshold.
Source and an optional next step
- This uses the 26-item Self-Compassion Scale, with attribution to Neff (2003), and the current official mean-of-six-means scoring key. The permission letter allows use for any purpose with citation; the official FAQ permits translation. This is copyrighted work used under that permission, not public-domain material. The Chinese items are a new FermatMind working translation, without empirical validation or established cross-language equivalence. Results are for voluntary adult self-reflection, without diagnosis, employment selection or a claim to measure personal worth.
- The full guide is free and public before answering, including when this part has no personal mean. You may finish here. A separate self-esteem assessment asks a different question about reported global self-regard; this SCS mean does not convert into that score. Optional drafts remain in this tab for at most 24 hours. Copying shares only a public title and link, never these answers or personal numbers.
