Read the component without turning it into a personal label
These four items ask about fixation on what is wrong, being consumed by inadequacy, getting carried away by feelings and magnifying a painful event. The term names a component of the SCS, not a diagnosis or proof that your reaction is unreasonable. The scale has no independent view of how serious the event was and does not measure the objective size of the problem.
All 4 numeric responses are required. Raw and reversed means have opposite meanings; read both labels.
What this component asks
These four items ask about fixation on what is wrong, being consumed by inadequacy, getting carried away by feelings and magnifying a painful event. The term names a component of the SCS, not a diagnosis or proof that your reaction is unreasonable. The scale has no independent view of how serious the event was and does not measure the objective size of the problem.
Read frequency and direction
A larger raw mean reflects more reported absorption in painful thoughts or feelings as worded here. A larger keyed mean reflects less after reversal and contributes in that direction to the overall score. A lower raw mean does not prove indifference, avoidance or emotional superiority. These responses cannot identify a rumination disorder, explain why thoughts repeat or establish how quickly you should move on.
A missed message becomes a much larger conclusion
A message has not been answered. One possible thought is “I do not know why there is no reply”; another is “This proves I ruin every relationship.” The second adds a broad conclusion to a limited observation. There may nevertheless be a real pattern of disrespect needing attention. The questionnaire cannot decide which account is true, and a score is not evidence that another person is trustworthy or that your concern should be ignored.
Separate an event from an expanded conclusion
You may write the event in one sentence, then put any wider prediction in a second sentence beginning “I am having the thought that…”. Check whether there is a concrete next action or more information needed. A counterexample is demanding that a painful feeling disappear before you deserve support. Do not force distance from an overwhelming experience; you can stop and seek help suited to the situation without waiting for a test result.
Arithmetic, missing answers and close values
- Items 2, 6, 20, 24 form this 4-item part. All are negative-keyed: the raw mean is the original response sum divided by 4. For the overall score each response becomes 6 minus response; the keyed mean is 6 minus the unrounded raw mean. For example, raw 4.00 becomes keyed 2.00. Both are labelled in the report.
- Equal or nearby means do not identify a winning trait, prove that two experiences are equivalent or establish a meaningful change. Compare the situations behind your own answers privately, without ranking people. One skipped answer withholds that part and the overall mean; other fully answered parts still have means. No skipped item is zero, and no missing answer is estimated. This strict completeness rule is a website policy, not a validated missing-data threshold.
Source and an optional next step
- This uses the 26-item Self-Compassion Scale, with attribution to Neff (2003), and the current official mean-of-six-means scoring key. The permission letter allows use for any purpose with citation; the official FAQ permits translation. This is copyrighted work used under that permission, not public-domain material. The Chinese items are a new FermatMind working translation, without empirical validation or established cross-language equivalence. Results are for voluntary adult self-reflection, without diagnosis, employment selection or a claim to measure personal worth.
- The full guide is free and public before answering, including when this part has no personal mean. You may finish here. A separate self-esteem assessment asks a different question about reported global self-regard; this SCS mean does not convert into that score. Optional drafts remain in this tab for at most 24 hours. Copying shares only a public title and link, never these answers or personal numbers.
