Fi · Introverted feeling
Read this function theme, its four original prompts, reverse key, examples, nearby distinctions and limits.
Three direct ratings and one reverse rating (6 − response), excluding unscored. At least three numeric ratings for a one-decimal mean; no ranking or stack.
Checking personal values before a choice
- Fi is a theoretical term for inwardly oriented feeling. Feeling here concerns value-based judgment, not simply being emotional. The four prompts focus on privately checking whether a choice and action fit values or convictions that matter to you personally. They do not measure moral goodness, empathy, emotional depth or the correctness of those values.
- A personal value can be reflected on, questioned and changed. Consulting it does not mean disregarding facts, responsibilities or the rights of others. Someone can care deeply about a value yet have limited freedom to act on it. The questionnaire describes endorsement of the checking process, not whether a person has lived an authentic or worthy life.
Four prompts, one descriptive mean
- The first three prompts contribute the selected number from 1 to 5. The fourth is reverse keyed: its contribution is 6 minus the selected number, so 1 becomes 5, 2 becomes 4 and 3 stays 3. An unscored answer contributes nothing and is excluded from the denominator. All 32 prompts need a response before any personal summaries appear.
- For responses 4, 3, 5 and 2, the keyed contributions are 4, 3, 5 and 4: sum 16, count 4, mean 4.0. For 4, unscored, 5 and 2, the sum is 13, count 3 and mean 4.3. With fewer than three numeric ratings, no mean is calculated. The minimum and one-decimal rounding are website conventions, not reliability or certainty thresholds.
An invitation and a personal conviction
- Imagine a fictional person, Jia, invited to join an optional activity. Most friends approve, but Jia privately considers whether participation fits a personal commitment to fairness. Jia asks for more information before deciding. This illustrates a values reference; it does not prove that Jia’s interpretation of fairness is right or that the friends lack values.
- Jia can explain a boundary without asking everyone to share the same conviction. Another person may reach the same decision through shared expectations or practical constraints. Similar actions can follow different considerations, so it is unsafe to assign someone else a function from observing one decision or reading a result card.
Personal conviction and shared expectations
- Fi prompts ask about a personal values reference; Fe prompts ask about the people involved and their expressed shared expectations. You may consult both before acting. They are not an egoism-versus-kindness scale, and a difference between their means cannot show who is more caring, independent or sincere. The sets have no common calibrated metric.
- Ti concerns internal consistency in definitions and explanations, while Fi concerns fit with values. A difficult choice can need both careful reasoning and a clear statement of what matters. The test does not sort people into emotional and logical camps or suggest that one process excludes the other. Keep the distinction about the question being considered.
More endorsement is not more integrity
- Nearer 5 indicates more keyed endorsement of pausing to consult personal values in these examples. Nearer 1 indicates less endorsement in the selected month, not an absence of principles. People may understand the word value differently or be making choices under strong constraints. No moral rank, authenticity score or relationship compatibility estimate follows.
- Agreement with the reverse prompt describes following surrounding approval without first checking your values; its numeric contribution is reversed. The response may fit a particular context without defining your whole life. If the wording does not fit an available experience, choose unscored rather than answer as the person you feel you ought to be.
Name one value and one tradeoff
- For a low-stakes optional choice, name one value you want to honor and one practical or interpersonal tradeoff. Ask whether there is a small action that respects both. A private note is sufficient. The purpose is to make your reasoning discussable, not to prove purity, eliminate compromise or train a psychological function.
- Respect other people’s boundaries and seek relevant advice for consequential decisions. A result should not pressure you to disclose beliefs, confront someone or justify a personal choice publicly. You may simply read, keep what is useful and stop; changing your view with new information is compatible with reflecting on values.
What this edition can and cannot conclude
- These original items and the English and Chinese versions have not established psychometric validity, reliability, population norms or measurement equivalence. The framework source explains terminology; it did not supply, approve or validate this bank. Means summarize keyed endorsement of different sets of statements. They are not calibrated against one another and do not establish a dominant, auxiliary or inferior function.
- No overall score, ordered function stack, four-letter type, diagnosis or decision about work or relationships is produced. Exact display ties remain ties; small gaps have no validated interpretation. All eight complete guides are available regardless of your ratings. Public guides contain no personal answers, and optional sharing includes only the test title and entry link.
