Ni · Introverted intuition
Read this function theme, its four original prompts, reverse key, examples, nearby distinctions and limits.
Three direct ratings and one reverse rating (6 − response), excluding unscored. At least three numeric ratings for a one-decimal mean; no ranking or stack.
A privately formed interpretation
- Ni is a theory term for an inwardly oriented form of intuition. This edition focuses on privately bringing impressions and patterns into a central interpretation, including a tentative sense of where a situation might lead. The four prompts ask about that reflective approach. They do not test prediction, intuition accuracy, access to unconscious material or any special ability.
- A result describes agreement with these particular examples during the past month. Someone may form a private interpretation and also seek many alternatives, remember past details or ask other people for evidence. These activities can coexist. The website does not convert a larger Ni mean into a dominant function, a function stack or an INFJ or INTJ label.
Four prompts, one descriptive mean
- The first three prompts contribute the selected number from 1 to 5. The fourth is reverse keyed: its contribution is 6 minus the selected number, so 1 becomes 5, 2 becomes 4 and 3 stays 3. An unscored answer contributes nothing and is excluded from the denominator. All 32 prompts need a response before any personal summaries appear.
- For responses 4, 3, 5 and 2, the keyed contributions are 4, 3, 5 and 4: sum 16, count 4, mean 4.0. For 4, unscored, 5 and 2, the sum is 13, count 3 and mean 4.3. With fewer than three numeric ratings, no mean is calculated. The minimum and one-decimal rounding are website conventions, not reliability or certainty thresholds.
A pattern in a changing project
- Consider a fictional person, Lin, who notices repeated changes in a voluntary project. Lin privately wonders whether the group is moving toward a different purpose, then tries to express that idea clearly. This fits the interpretation theme even if the eventual explanation is wrong. Correctly predicting the project’s future is a different question that these ratings cannot answer.
- A useful next step would be to separate the impression from its supporting observations: what happened, what Lin thinks it means, and what would count against that interpretation. Quiet reflection does not make an interpretation more authoritative than another person’s account. Ask about the situation without claiming to know motives that have not been shared.
Ni, Ne and a remembered example
- The Ni prompts emphasize gathering impressions into one underlying reading. The Ne prompts emphasize opening several possibilities through connections with the outside world. A person can endorse both: generating several possibilities first, then privately developing one interpretation. Different means cannot tell us that one approach is stronger in the brain or more developed as a psychological function.
- Si, by contrast, asks about concrete present impressions in relation to personally remembered experience. Thinking “this resembles the meeting last month” supplies a remembered reference; thinking “these events point toward a change in purpose” supplies an interpretation. Real reasoning can use both in one conversation, so the distinction is a vocabulary aid rather than a boundary between kinds of people.
Read endorsement without elevating insight
- A mean nearer 5 indicates greater endorsement of working toward a private central interpretation after the reverse item is keyed. Nearer 1 indicates less endorsement of these four prompts. Neither value tells us whether your ideas are original, profound, realistic or helpful. A lower result also cannot establish that you lack intuition or must belong to another function category.
- The middle response includes partial fit and dependence on the setting. Three moderate ratings may describe a different month from a mix of strong agreement and disagreement. Read the actual responses, including whether the reverse prompt felt clear. There are no high-Ni cutoffs, rarity claims or life-stage rules in this edition.
Make one interpretation testable
- If reflection feels useful, write one tentative interpretation and two observations that led you there. Add one alternative explanation and one observation that would make you revise your first idea. This is an optional thinking exercise, not a way to train or certify Ni. You can keep the note private or skip it.
- Choose an ordinary, low-stakes situation rather than health, safety, money or another person’s private life. For consequential decisions, gather the relevant evidence and expertise directly. If the same approach appears less often in a different setting next month, that is context to understand rather than a failed personality result.
What this edition can and cannot conclude
- These original items and the English and Chinese versions have not established psychometric validity, reliability, population norms or measurement equivalence. The framework source explains terminology; it did not supply, approve or validate this bank. Means summarize keyed endorsement of different sets of statements. They are not calibrated against one another and do not establish a dominant, auxiliary or inferior function.
- No overall score, ordered function stack, four-letter type, diagnosis or decision about work or relationships is produced. Exact display ties remain ties; small gaps have no validated interpretation. All eight complete guides are available regardless of your ratings. Public guides contain no personal answers, and optional sharing includes only the test title and entry link.
