Ti · Introverted thinking
Read this function theme, its four original prompts, reverse key, examples, nearby distinctions and limits.
Three direct ratings and one reverse rating (6 − response), excluding unscored. At least three numeric ratings for a one-decimal mean; no ranking or stack.
An internally consistent explanation
- Ti is a theoretical term for inwardly oriented thinking. In this edition, it concerns examining definitions, assumptions and the internal consistency of an explanation as you understand it. The four prompts ask about engaging in that kind of analysis. They do not test reasoning accuracy, mathematical skill, intelligence, objectivity or whether your conclusions are true.
- Internal consistency is one consideration in reasoning, not a guarantee that the starting assumptions fit reality. A beautifully consistent account can still rely on incomplete evidence. Someone who endorses these prompts can also attend to shared goals, personal values and other people’s expectations. The eight means do not divide reason from emotion or assign a rationality grade.
Four prompts, one descriptive mean
- The first three prompts contribute the selected number from 1 to 5. The fourth is reverse keyed: its contribution is 6 minus the selected number, so 1 becomes 5, 2 becomes 4 and 3 stays 3. An unscored answer contributes nothing and is excluded from the denominator. All 32 prompts need a response before any personal summaries appear.
- For responses 4, 3, 5 and 2, the keyed contributions are 4, 3, 5 and 4: sum 16, count 4, mean 4.0. For 4, unscored, 5 and 2, the sum is 13, count 3 and mean 4.3. With fewer than three numeric ratings, no mean is calculated. The minimum and one-decimal rounding are website conventions, not reliability or certainty thresholds.
Clarifying a rule in a small game
- In a fictional game night, An notices that two rules use the word “turn” differently. Before the next round, An asks what each rule means and whether the examples fit the same definition. This illustrates interest in a coherent account. It does not prove that An is correct, more analytical than the others or better suited to any occupation.
- The group may need a workable temporary agreement while the ambiguity is explored later. Clarification and timely participation can both matter. A test result should not be used as a reason to keep everyone waiting or to dismiss people who are content with a practical convention. Ask whether the distinction affects the actual decision.
Ti and Te ask different questions
- The Ti prompts ask whether the explanation makes sense within your own understanding. Te prompts ask about explicit goals, requirements, observable results and organizing action. “Are we using the same definition?” and “What result have we agreed to check?” can both be useful in one project. Their means are not competing measures of logical ability.
- Personal conviction in Fi is another kind of inward reference, concerning values rather than the consistency of a conceptual account. Values and analysis can inform the same choice. The questionnaire does not infer that a greater Ti mean means less empathy, weaker values or an inability to cooperate. Such claims would go beyond the questions asked.
Read the wish to examine, not an ability
- Nearer 5 means more keyed endorsement of examining terms and internal contradictions in these situations. Nearer 1 means less endorsement during the month, not a lack of thinking. Time pressure, familiarity and the purpose of a conversation can influence whether pursuing a distinction feels worthwhile. A rating does not reveal why an opportunity was absent.
- The fourth item is reverse keyed: more endorsement of leaving contradictions unexplored contributes fewer points to this topic. That does not make the response wrong. Sometimes a temporary practical answer is sufficient. Read the original response and the context alongside the keyed sum rather than treating the mean as a judgment of intellectual standards.
Separate definitions from evidence
- Choose one harmless explanation you are trying to understand. Write its key term, one assumption and an example that seems to challenge it. Then ask separately whether the relevant real-world evidence supports the explanation. This keeps internal coherence and external support visible without claiming to diagnose or strengthen Ti.
- If another person is involved, ask whether they want to explore the distinction and respect their answer. An optional thought exercise need not become a debate, a disclosure or a permanent project. You may stop after clarifying one useful point, and a different approach next time does not invalidate your earlier responses.
What this edition can and cannot conclude
- These original items and the English and Chinese versions have not established psychometric validity, reliability, population norms or measurement equivalence. The framework source explains terminology; it did not supply, approve or validate this bank. Means summarize keyed endorsement of different sets of statements. They are not calibrated against one another and do not establish a dominant, auxiliary or inferior function.
- No overall score, ordered function stack, four-letter type, diagnosis or decision about work or relationships is produced. Exact display ties remain ties; small gaps have no validated interpretation. All eight complete guides are available regardless of your ratings. Public guides contain no personal answers, and optional sharing includes only the test title and entry link.
