Read forgiveness, gentleness, flexibility and patience while preserving boundaries and justified disagreement.
Read this domain continuously, with its four facets in mind. A higher number is neither a better person nor an independently verified trait.
Four responses to friction
Forgiveness concerns grudges and retaliation. Gentleness concerns judging and speaking about others. Flexibility concerns adapting and considering suggestions. Patience concerns anger and irritation. These four preliminary facets make this domain particularly relevant to conflict responses. It does not simply mean kindness, and its organisation differs from Big Five agreeableness. Honesty–Humility carries other fairness and exploitation content separately.
Reading a higher self-report
A higher keyed mean describes more forgiving, gentle, flexible and patient self-reports in this bank. You may describe cooling down before replying or considering a suggestion that changes your plan. That does not establish that every compromise is wise. Agreeing to an unfair request, suppressing justified anger or staying in an unsafe interaction are not required by a higher result.
Reading a lower self-report
A lower mean may reflect irritation, reluctance to forgive, critical speech or resistance to suggestions. Those are distinct behaviours with different contexts. Firm disagreement can protect a boundary, while habitual insults can damage trust; the number does not determine which occurred. Notice how you express a limit and what happens after the immediate emotion rather than calling yourself a difficult person.
When the four facets differ
Someone may be patient during a disagreement yet remember the offence for a long time, or forgive quickly while speaking sharply in the moment. Both can produce middle domain values. A mean of three is not proof of the ideal conflict style or a safe relationship. This edition does not show separate facet scores, so use the four distinctions as reading questions without inventing personal facet numbers.
A transparent forty-item example
Thirty-eight keyed threes and two keyed ones sum to 116, for a mean of 2.90. The two low keyed ratings could arise from direct answers of one or reversed answers of five. A different forty-answer pattern can give the same sum. The displayed decimals do not identify which facet drove it or establish a reliable difference from 3.00. Any NA keeps the personal sum and mean unavailable.
A boundary can be patient and firm
Imagine declining an extra task with a clear reason and a calm tone. That is different from accepting reluctantly and later retaliating, or refusing with an insult. A report cannot decide whether the original request was fair. Separate the request, your emotional reaction, the words you used and the later repair. Forgiveness does not require restoring trust or removing a protective limit.
Practise one repairable response
Pick a low-stakes disagreement. Pause, state the point you understand and name the point you still reject. Ask a clarifying question before assuming bad intent. Later check whether your tone helped convey your boundary. You can practise this without trying to raise a score or making yourself responsible for someone else’s harmful behaviour. Use appropriate distance when a conversation cannot be conducted safely.
Source, scoring and edition limits
This guide accompanies all forty published items for this domain in the preliminary IPIP scales linked to Lee and Ashton (2004), not the current official HEXACO-PI-R sixty or hundred item inventories. Five accuracy responses score one to five; negative keys use six minus the response. Forty valid ratings give a raw sum of forty to two hundred and a mean; the report divides that unrounded sum by forty and displays two decimals. Each of four ten-item facets has equal weight, but this edition reports the domain rather than separate facet scores. Any NA withholds this domain’s personal sum and mean. English wording and keys are retained, with interleaved presentation and our Chinese trial translation. Those presentation, translation and missing-response choices have no independent psychometric validation here. Public-domain permission is a reuse right, not scientific endorsement. There are no population norms, percentile ranks, clinical thresholds, hiring decisions or fixed types.
