Read fearfulness, anxiety, dependence and sentimentality without turning sensitivity or reassurance into a diagnosis.
Read this domain continuously, with its four facets in mind. A higher number is neither a better person nor an independently verified trait.
What this domain combines
Fearfulness concerns reactions to danger and physical harm. Anxiety concerns worry and troubling thoughts. Dependence concerns seeking reassurance, support or comfort from other people. Sentimentality concerns emotional bonds and being moved by others’ experiences. These are the preliminary bank’s four facets. Emotionality is not a count of every emotion, and HEXACO anger-related content sits largely in Agreeableness rather than making this a simple substitute for Big Five neuroticism.
Reading a higher self-report
A higher keyed mean describes more endorsement of this mixture of fear, worry, support-seeking and emotional connection. You might seek reassurance before an unfamiliar trip or feel moved by a friend’s loss. Those are different processes: support can be available and helpful, while worry can vary with the situation. A higher score does not prove greater empathy, distress, weakness or a mental disorder.
Reading a lower self-report
A lower mean may describe comfort with danger, fewer worries, less reassurance-seeking or a more restrained sentimental response. It does not establish courage or safe judgement. Someone who reports little fear may still take sensible precautions, or may underestimate a hazard; the questionnaire cannot decide which. Needing little reassurance also says nothing about whether you deserve support when circumstances change.
Separating a middle score
A middle mean can combine low fearfulness with strong sentimental bonds, or high worry with little willingness to ask for help. It can also come from selecting the middle option throughout. Do not assume emotional balance or average wellbeing. Look for which kinds of situation make a statement accurate, and keep temporary stress, available support, culture and wording in view.
A transparent forty-item example
Forty keyed ratings of three produce a raw sum of 120 and a mean of 3.00. Changing one direct answer from three to five raises the sum to 122 and the mean to 3.05. Changing a reverse-keyed answer from three to five lowers them to 118 and 2.95. Decimal differences describe arithmetic, not an established reliable personal change. With any NA this domain remains insufficient.
Feelings and actions can differ
Picture two people preparing for a presentation. One worries intensely and asks a friend for encouragement, yet delivers calmly; another feels little fear but still rehearses carefully. Both may act competently. Feeling moved by a film does not prove knowing how to support a distressed colleague. Use a concrete observation to distinguish what was felt, what help was wanted and what action followed.
Name one useful support request
Choose one ordinary situation and name the support that would help: information, company, reassurance or practical assistance. Ask whether it is available rather than treating dependence as a flaw or compulsory goal. If you prefer to handle things alone, identify a condition under which you would ask someone. This reflection does not assess treatment needs and should not replace an appropriate conversation about persistent difficulties.
Source, scoring and edition limits
This guide accompanies all forty published items for this domain in the preliminary IPIP scales linked to Lee and Ashton (2004), not the current official HEXACO-PI-R sixty or hundred item inventories. Five accuracy responses score one to five; negative keys use six minus the response. Forty valid ratings give a raw sum of forty to two hundred and a mean; the report divides that unrounded sum by forty and displays two decimals. Each of four ten-item facets has equal weight, but this edition reports the domain rather than separate facet scores. Any NA withholds this domain’s personal sum and mean. English wording and keys are retained, with interleaved presentation and our Chinese trial translation. Those presentation, translation and missing-response choices have no independent psychometric validation here. Public-domain permission is a reuse right, not scientific endorsement. There are no population norms, percentile ranks, clinical thresholds, hiring decisions or fixed types.
