Explore expressiveness, social boldness, sociability and liveliness without assigning a better social personality.
Read this domain continuously, with its four facets in mind. A higher number is neither a better person nor an independently verified trait.
Four routes into social experience
The preliminary bank combines expressiveness, social boldness, sociability and liveliness. Expressiveness concerns talking and showing feelings; boldness concerns visibility and leading; sociability concerns seeking company; liveliness concerns reported energy and enthusiasm. A person may enjoy friends yet dislike public attention, or speak openly while preferring solitude afterward. This is a particular published IPIP key, not a replacement for every measure called extraversion.
Reading a higher self-report
A higher keyed mean indicates stronger endorsement of this combined outward, social and lively content. You might initiate conversation, enjoy a group activity or report energy across a day. It does not establish popularity, social skill, leadership effectiveness or constant enthusiasm. Opportunities, familiarity, fatigue and whether the group feels welcoming can change the behaviour you describe.
Reading a lower self-report
A lower mean can describe reserve, less appetite for attention, preference for fewer companions or lower reported liveliness. It is not evidence of a social deficit or lack of care. A quiet person can listen closely and lead effectively in a familiar setting. Recent illness, workload or an inaccessible environment may also affect energy-related responses without defining a lasting social identity.
A middle mean is not one social style
Middle values may combine high sociability with low public boldness, or expressive conversation with low daily energy. Neither pattern needs to be resolved into an ambivert label. Six domain means can coincide without a tie requiring a winning type; different domains also contain different content, so a numerically highest mean is not automatically your strongest skill.
A transparent forty-item example
If all forty keyed ratings are four, the raw sum is 160 and the mean is 4.00. Reaching that pattern requires a raw answer of two on every reverse item, not four on every screen. An all-four answer pattern therefore has a different total. These are response examples, not population comparisons. One NA withholds this domain’s personal score while leaving the other fully rated domains available.
Compare two settings before labelling
Recall a conversation with a close friend and an unfamiliar group meeting. Were you equally talkative, comfortable being noticed and energised afterward? A person who is animated in the first setting and silent in the second has not contradicted themselves. The general-accuracy wording compresses that variation. Use the contrast to explain an answer, rather than treating either moment as the only real you.
Choose a fitting social experiment
Try one bounded adjustment: initiate a short conversation, request a quieter discussion or plan recovery time after a large event. Observe enjoyment, effort and whether the setting allowed participation. The aim is a better fit, not becoming maximally outgoing. You can communicate a preference without sharing this score, and a public guide link reveals no answers or personal mean.
Source, scoring and edition limits
This guide accompanies all forty published items for this domain in the preliminary IPIP scales linked to Lee and Ashton (2004), not the current official HEXACO-PI-R sixty or hundred item inventories. Five accuracy responses score one to five; negative keys use six minus the response. Forty valid ratings give a raw sum of forty to two hundred and a mean; the report divides that unrounded sum by forty and displays two decimals. Each of four ten-item facets has equal weight, but this edition reports the domain rather than separate facet scores. Any NA withholds this domain’s personal sum and mean. English wording and keys are retained, with interleaved presentation and our Chinese trial translation. Those presentation, translation and missing-response choices have no independent psychometric validation here. Public-domain permission is a reuse right, not scientific endorsement. There are no population norms, percentile ranks, clinical thresholds, hiring decisions or fixed types.
